In sweltering heat, U.S. Rep. Will Hurd and the mayors of the border towns of Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña held hands — presumably sweaty ones — with residents from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border on Saturday. It was a gesture they hoped would represent the unity and interdependency between their cities.

Increasing bridge traffic continues

The steady increase of traffic on the City of Eagle Pass’ international bridge system as compared to 2015 continues, with all but two classes of traffic increasing.

Cars and pick ups had a 3.10 percent increase in traffic; 2 axle trucks had a 3.27 percent increase; 3 axle trucks had a 24.43 percent increase; 4 axle trucks had a decrease of 14.81 percent; 5 axle trucks had an increase of 4.40 percent; 6 axle trucks had a 150.68 percent; buses had an increase of 17.04 percent; and pedestrian traffic fell 0.94 percent.

Bridge Director Placido Madera said people can expect a bridge traffic hike of approximately 20 percent this tax-free weekend.

In August of 2014 the bridge system averaged 6500 cars, while Friday and Saturday of tax-free weekend there were  8,000 cars.

“It was pretty similar to that 2015 as well: we averaged 5,800 cars, and then that Friday and Saturday we averaged 8,400. About 1,600 more cars and pickups compared to the rest of the month,” said Madera.

Pedestrian traffic was not as consistent, with more than a 30 percent increase from the August 2014 average, and an increase of only about 12 percent from the August 2015 average.
