Before a pregnant, brain-dead Texas woman was taken off life support over the weekend at the end of a long legal battle, her husband said he decided to name what would have been the couple's second child.
Erick Munoz said Monday he gave the 23-week-old fetus the name Nicole, the middle name of his late wife, Marlise Munoz. He would not say why he chose to name the fetus.
Republican candidate addresses anti-abortion rally
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott is scheduled to address an anti-abortion rally on the steps on the Texas Capitol.
He was invited by Texas Alliance for Life, which organized Saturday's rally.
Abortion will be an important topic in the race to replace Gov. Rick Perry. Abbott opposes abortion in all cases, except where the health of the mother is at risk.
His likely Democratic opponent, Fort Worth Sen. Wendy Davis, gained national attention by filibustering stringent new restrictions on abortions in Texas.
Organizers of the annual rally say it will focus on the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court that guarantees a woman's right to choose an abortion in the first three months of pregnancy.
Abbott and the organizers want to overturn that decision.

Hospital told to take pregnant woman off support

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — For two months, Erick Munoz has sat inside a North Texas hospital room next to his pregnant, brain-dead wife, with what would be their second child together growing inside her.
Now a judge has ruled that the hospital must follow Munoz's wishes and disconnect Marlise Munoz from life support that it's refused to remove in hopes of saving the fetus inside her.
The judge's ruling Friday could give Erick Munoz a long-awaited chance to bury his wife and move forward to care for their son and his relatives. It would also mean the fetus would never be born.
