AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Health experts say flu vaccine is now available in Texas. The Texas Department of State Health Services on Wednesday encouraged people to get vaccinated. Thursday is Texas Influenza Awareness Day. An agency statement says the flu vaccine is formulated annually to match viruses that researchers think will be circulating. Changes in the flu virus caused last year's vaccine to be less effective. The strain that caused most of the illness last year is incorporated into this season's vaccine. Researchers expect it to be much more effective. Medical authorities say everyone age 6 months and older should get vaccinated. People age 65 and older, pregnant women, young children and those with chronic health conditions — including asthma, diabetes, and heart and lung disease — are more susceptible to flu.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University of Texas is starting the process of deciding where to allow concealed handguns on campus. The 50,000-student campus is hosting Wednesday night the first of two public forums for input that will be considered when school officials decide where guns will be allowed under a new state law. Despite fierce resistance from some schools, including at UT, Texas state lawmakers forced public universities to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons in campus buildings and classrooms. Private universities don't have to comply. But lawmakers allowed schools to carve out gun-free zones so long as it doesn't cover most or all of campuses. Gun rights activists call campus carry a personal safety measure. Opponents say it'll cause more campus violence. The law takes effect next August.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —
Home-state presidential hopeful and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz says he's secured endorsements from 36 Republican Texas state representatives and five state senators.
Cruz announced Wednesday that those backers joined fellow Republicans and U.S. Reps. Randy Weber, Louie Gohmert, Michael Burgess, John Culberson, John Ratcliffe and Brian Babin in formally endorsing his 2016 White House bid.
Tea party-backed Cruz has angered members of the Republican establishment in Washington, but remains popular with grassroots activists and top conservatives back home.
Former Gov. Rick Perry dropped out of the race, but many other presidential candidates have Texas ties.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was born in Midland, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul grew up in Texas and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina was born in Austin.
Texas holds its presidential primary March 1.
