Texas Gov. Greg Abbot has appointed Dallas schools board member Mike Morath as the state's new education commissioner.
Morath has been a trustee for the Dallas Independent School District since 2011. As head of the Texas Education Agency, he'll oversee the state's 1,200 school districts and charter schools.
The appointment announced Monday is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
Morath will replace Michael Williams, who is stepping down Jan. 1.
Abbott's office says Morath has led Dallas school efforts to create performance-based pay for teachers, improve early childhood programs and increase graduation rates.
He is a graduate of George Washington University and is chairman of Morath Investments. He also is president of Minute Menu Systems, which helped manage a federal child nutrition program.
