Governor Gregg Abbot designated April 8th as Community Health Worker day.

A total of about 30 Eagle Pass Community Health workers traveled to our state Capitol in Austin to celebrate this special milestone. Twenty years ago, Texas became the first state to pass legislation and recognize the vital role CHW’s play in outreach and education programs in rural communities. Community Health Workers (also known as Promotores), are dedicated specialists who have a passion for advocating and working with vulnerable and underserved residents in minority populations. Various of our local CHW’s work or volunteer in organizations such as Dia a Dia, United Medical Centers, DSHS, Consulado General de Mexico, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations in town. If you are interested in becoming a certified Community Health Worker or would like to learn how your organization or clinic would benefit from having a CHW please give us a call at 830.758.1111 or email Brenda Hoffman, Director of Southwest Border AHEC, at This email address is being protected from spambots.
