Mayor Cantu expressed his concern over
the safety and well-being of all community
members on both sides of the Rio Grande,
and of the people who are seeking asylum
into the United States.
“To the citizens of Eagle Pass, as you are
aware of the arrival of 1,800 immigrants in
our sister city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila
via bus transportation. And have entered a
sheltered area for their safety and comfort.
There is currently an on-going operation
between our federal partners the United
States Customs and Border Protection and
the U.S Border Patrol alongside our Rio
Grande River and both of our Ports of
Entries,” said Cantu. “We have been in constant
communication with our U.S. federal
partners and city officials in Piedras Negras.
I want to assure our residents that while this
operation remains, our bridges will remain
fully operational with a heavy inspection
process while entering the U.S. It is the
City’s, and our federal partners' mission to
assure the safety and well-being of all residents
to protect our homeland and community.
This will be considered to be a longstanding
process for those who wish to wait
and request political asylum and any assistance
from the United States of America, As
our Port of entry can only process a limited
amount of individuals on a daily basis. We
assure a coordinated effort - and contingency
efforts ready -should any situation occur. We
remind all of our residents that we’re here to
protect and serve. I want you to know that
there is the very best protecting our border
and community. We remain vigilant in securing
our city as we do everyday. Thank you
and God bless.” concluded Mayor Cantu.
