Parks and Recreation Director Jorge Sanchez has announced the beginning of the after school flag football and volleyball leagues.

A total of 64 teams are participating this year, said Sanchez, which means over 800 students are currently participating in the leagues.

“We started with our after school league program that the Parks and Recreation Department from the City of Eagle Pass runs year after year,” said Sanchez. “We did start for the elementary level divisions I,II, and III, first through sixth grade flag football for boys and volleyball for girls. these games are being held at Chelos Field #2 for the flag football, and the volleyball league is being held at the Multipurpose in the Fort Duncan area.”

The leagues run from Monday through Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to about 5:00 p.m. The program lasts 8 weeks, and Sanchez said that the students will be over by Thanksgiving break.

“Right after we finish with these leagues we’ll begin with our after school basketball leagues for boys and girls, same divisions,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez is also asking the community to be patient with city park maintenance.

“Within the city we had a lot of inclement weather last week so we’re a little back tracked with the maintenance like the cutting of the grass, but we should hopefully have things ready in a week,” said Sanchez.
