AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A prominent dean at the University of Texas says he's leaving the state for another job in large part because of the new state law that allows concealed handguns into public college classrooms.
Fritz Steiner, dean of the Texas School of Architecture, announced Thursday he's leaving in July to lead the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.
Steiner says he's been happy at Texas and wouldn't have considered a job offer anywhere else until Texas lawmakers passed the campus carry law that takes effect Aug. 1. Steiner says he can't be responsible for helping enforce a law he doesn't believe in.
University of Texas President Greg Fenves last week said he doesn't support guns on campus and complained it will make it hard to recruit and keep quality faculty.
