COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) —
Columbia authorities say a man wanted on a murder charge in Houston was killed by officers in a shootout as they tried to arrest him.
Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said at a news conference that the suspect fired at police just before noon Monday, and the officers fired back at an apartment complex several miles east of downtown Columbia.
Timmons says none of the officers was injured.
Richland County deputies say the suspect died at the hospital. They are not releasing his name or details about the murder charge until his family is notified.
Deputies are investigating the shootout because a violent-fugitive task force made up of Columbia police, federal agents and the State Law Enforcement Division was involved in the arrest.
