The first seizure occurred early Wednesday morning, April 9, 2014 at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge after a 20-year-old female Mexican citizen from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico arrived in a green 2001 Chevrolet Impala. The adult female presented her Mexican border-crossing card to a CBP officer who referred her to secondary for a more thorough examination. While performing the secondary inspection and with the use of a vehicle non-intrusive imaging system, officers discovered packages of suspected narcotics hidden within the Impala. CBP-OFO removed 19 packages of alleged cocaine weighing approximately 20.42 kilograms (45.02 lbs.). The narcotics, which carry an estimated street value of $1,442,000 were seized along with the vehicle.
The second seizure occurred before noon on the same date and at the same border crossing after CBP officers encountered a black 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 33-year-old male United States citizen from McAllen, Texas. The traveler was referred to secondary after presenting a State of Texas issued birth certificate along with an identification card and it was there that officers discovered 31 packages of alleged cocaine weighing approximately 18.82 kilograms (41.50 lbs.) concealed within the Pontiac. CBP-OFO seized the narcotics, valued at approximately $1,328,000 and the vehicle as well.
CBP-OFO arrested both individuals and subsequently released them to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents for further investigation.
