AUSTIN — At a series of events in key markets across Texas, Representative Poncho Nevárez, Speaker Joe Straus and members of the Texas Legislature are launching 'Water Texas,' an effort to win voter approval for Proposition 6 to secure a long-term water supply for Texas. Speaker Straus recently kicked off the effort with a news conference with local officials in Amarillo. “The water crisis impacts every part of our great state, from our growing cities and industries to our farming and ranching communities,” said House Speaker Joe Straus, the Honorary Chairman of Water Texas.

“Proposition 6 will help address this crisis and ensure that Texas has an adequate supply of water for the next 50 years.” Proposition 6 is a constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas and the State Water Implementation Revenue Fund for Texas to assist in the financing of priority projects in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water resources. On November 5, Texas voters will have the opportunity to approve nine proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution, includ ing Proposition 6. Early voting starts October 21 and will continue until November 1. “I am proud to stand with Speaker Straus as a member of the Water Texas leadership team, and look forward to working hard from now until November 5th to secure passage of Proposition 6,” said Representative Nevárez. “Water is vital to our state’s future, and Proposition 6 will allow Texas to remain a leader in economic development, job growth and wealth creation for generations to come.” Texas lacks the adequate water supply we need to meet our state’s needs, and the severe drought of the last couple years has only made matters worse. More than 1,000 people move to Texas every day, and our population is expected to double by 2060. During that same time, Texas’ water supplies are expected to decrease by 10%. Texas does not have enough water to meet the growing demands of our population and economy. Proposition 6 addresses this by authorizing a one-time use of $2 billion to fully implement the 50-year State Water Plan. It will fund projects such as the construction of new pipelines and provide local control by allowing each region of the state to prioritize its own needs and oversee its own projects. About Water Texas Water Texas PAC is a strong bipartisan coalition of legislators working to promote passage of Proposition 6 on the November ballot. We understand that a lack of water impacts all Texans, and the cost of doing nothing is too great for our citizens, economy, and our children and grandchildren.
