Governor Abbott Announces U.S. Navy Support In Rio Grande Valley, Southwest Texas To Help Combat COVID-19

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced over the weekend that the U.S. Department of Defense has sent five U.S. Navy teams to four locations in South and Southwest Texas to help combat the spread of COVID-19. 

Starting on Sunday, one U.S. Navy Acute Care Team will provide support at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen and four U.S. Navy Rural Rapid Response

Teams will support hospitals in Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Rio Grande City.

These teams consist of medical and support professionals which are being deployed to help meet medical needs in hospitals throughout the state.

Texas communities in the Rio Grande Valley and along the Southwest Border Including in Maverick County are seeing a surge of Covid-19 Virus cases.

Locally, there are 1,162 positive Covid-19 Virus cases or about 1 out of every 50.28 persons per capita infected.

Just last week, there was an increase of 349 cases going from 820 to 1,169 a 43% increase from July 10th to July 17th.

Officials have publicly stated that this is a dire situation as they try to keep up with so many variables including the need for medical care professionals to assist with a surge of patients at our local hospital.

Maverick County Judge David Saucedo and Eagle Pass Mayor Luis Sifuentes have requested assistance from the Federal and State Government to keep up with all that is occurring as a result of the increased infections of Covid-19.

Governor Abbott issued out a statement on Sunday. “The support from our federal partners is crucial in our work to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our communities throughout Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “I am grateful for this ongoing partnership with the Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy, and the State of Texas will continue to utilize every resource available to protect public health and keep Texans in every community safe.”

Officials do urge the community to take all the necessary precautions and help stop the spread of the Covid-19 Virus that has killed 16 community members.
