It was one for the ages as our two youngest squads, the 7th grade Silver & Black Attack Memorial Mavericks and the 7th Grade EPJ 2000 Burnt Orange Blaze, an Eagle squad which showed that it possesses some serious speed at the skill positions with Carlos Luna, Ricky De Los Santos and Braulio Rodriguez contributing yardage in chunks going up against the three-headed monster of Omar Ramos, Fernando Zapata and workhorse Miguel De Los Santos of the Mavs.
These two squads were coming off a couple of winning streaks, the Mavericks were on a three game tear through both Laredo schools and Del Rio, and the Eagles were undefeated at 7-0 on the season, so something had to give.
Both teams scored on their opening drives with EPJ scoring on a Braulio Rodriguez run, then Mendoza took it in for the extra point.
The Mavericks answered with a TD run by De Los Santos who literally carried half of the Eagle 'D' with him on a prior play inside the five yard line. The PAT was no good and the Eagles led 8-6.
The highlights of the rest of this game were either high school caliber passes, reverses or high-pressure, high percentage passes to extend drives as both defenses buckled down thwarting drives and big plays in this hard-hitting affair.
It was Mendoza who called his own number on TD # 2 with a Johnny Manziel-like dive into the endzone for the second EPJ 2000 score as New Principal Mario Escobar looked on in pride.
The PAT was no good as MJH Principal Vera Sumpter seemed to will her defenders to step it up as big Isaac Villarreal, Darrell Cantú, Dario De Hoyos, Jorge Contreras and Diego Ibarra corralled Ricky De Los Santos taking him down before reaching the goal line.
The Mavericks would get the ball first in the second half and capitalized on a halfback pass from Omar Ramos to Isaac Villarreal over two Eagle Defenders which landed squarely in Villareal's hands thirty yards down the field.
The Mavericks proceeded to drive into EPJ territory including a sweet pitch and catch from Reta to Fernando Zapata on a 4th and 7 to extend the drive before Ramos himself took it in for the score to make it a 14-12 game.
The Eagles scored quickly on a reverse to Luna who outraced the entire Mav defense to the endzone on a fifty five yard romp to paydirt. Again the Maverick defense halted the extra point, 20-12, EPJ 2000.
This was the score through the end of regulation until 1:02 remaining in the game when EPJ took a page out of J.A. Tovar's playbook and delivered a picture perfect halfback pass of their own to pull away 26-12 before Isaac Gonzalez dove into the end zone for the two point conversion. Then with :46 ticks left on the clock, Reta hit Villarreal in stride on a seventy five yard touchdown pass which caused everyone to remain on edge for the ensuing on-sides kick which was recovered by the Eagles.
Thus, the final game of the 2013 season went down to the wire and both Tom Gonzalez' and Eric Villaseñor's coaching staffs went away pleased and with high expectations for the future.

Eagles enter final stretch of football season
By Rey Sifuentes Jr.
After getting a chance to catch its breath last week, Eagle Pass High School’s varsity football team resumes its District 29-5A campaign, and push for the playoffs, by visiting Del Rio at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
On offense and defense, the Rams can do multiple things.
“They do a lot of things offensively in order to run the ball,” Head Coach Tom Gonzalez said. “Defensively, they have some size, but actually they are very big on both sides of the ball. Their players on each side run hard, so this should be a good test for us.”
The Eagles were able to do two important things with their bye (no game) last week. One was mend. The other was begin drawing up a game plan for their long time border rival.
“Our bye week was very beneficial to do some things that we needed to,” Gonzalez said. “We got some of our boys healed up and also started looking at our game plan for our game against Del Rio.”
Minus one season ending injury, EPHS is pretty much at full strength right now.
“Right now we have pretty much everyone doing well as far as health,” Gonzalez said. “Unfortunately we have a tailback who is out for the year. But everyone else pretty much is ready to go.”
Eagle Pass is still looking to conjure up a little more synchronicity with its final two games of the season determining whether they qualify for the playoffs.
“In our eyes we need to win these next two ball games (against Del Rio and C.C. Winn),” Gonzalez said. “And the biggest thing that we need in order to win is more consistency. Defensively and offensively, we are coming along and putting more pressure on our opponents. As a team we need to be more consistent because sometimes it is one or two guys making the kind of mistakes that cost us.”

Mavericks take on Longhorns on Friday
By Rey Sifuentes Jr.
With a 1-3 record in District 29-5A, C.C. Winn High School’s varsity football team is still very much in the playoff race right now.
The Mavericks’ postseason hopes, however, will be tested this Friday (at 7:30 p.m.) when they host Laredo United in their second to last game of the season.
The Longhorns are apt at moving the ball quickly down the field.
“United is a very up tempo spread offensive team,” Head Coach Eric Villasenor said. “They are very high octane and score a lot of points. They like to throw the ball vertically down the field, and they have a good quarterback as well as some good receivers.”
On defense, the Horns are basic, but effective.
“Defensively, United runs a 3-4 scheme,” Villasenor said. “They have a good middle linebacker as well as a talented defensive end. So we have our work cut out for us on Friday night.”
CCWN’s final two opponents of this season are no pushovers – United and Eagle Pass, both of whom are also in the playoff mix in 29-5A.
“Laredo United is tied for first with Laredo Alexander, and Eagle Pass is currently in third,” Villasenor said. “So we have two tough ball clubs in our last two games of the season. But we are not mathematically out of the playoffs, we are still in the hunt. Now we just need to take care of business.”
At the same time, Villasenor has seen his own ball club develop considerably this season.
“As a team we have gotten better this season, while there are always some things a team can improve on,” he said. “Our offensive line play could get a little better, as well as our secondary.”
The Mavericks notched their first conference win under Villasenor – a 28-7 victory over Laredo LBJ and father Oscar Villasenor.
“It was very bitter sweet after the game for both of us,” Villasenor said. “He hugged me, told me he was proud of me, and that he loved me very much. We played a great game, did not turn the ball over. We moved the ball very well on offense, and our defense played very fundamentally sound.”

Lady Eagles win share of district title
By Rey Sifuentes Jr.
And when the dust had finally settled, the Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team finished its regular season as Co-District 29-5A champions along with Del Rio and Laredo Alexander.
Eagle Pass High School earned a share of the district title after defeating C.C. Winn in three straight sets – 25-13, 25-16, and 25-20 – on Tuesday night.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles trumped Del Rio three games to two - 25-22, 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, and 15-11.
Individual statistics: Amanda Gonzalez - 12 kills, nine points, an ace, and four digs. Victoria Torralba - 10 points, eight digs and an ace. Vivian Ramirez - 13 kills, 10 points, two aces, five digs, and two blocks. Riana Garcia - 10 kills, three digs, an assist, and three blocks. Sophie Gomez – eight points and three aces. Jamie Donley – 10 points, 35 assists, 21 digs, and a kill. Camille Pina – 23 digs and an assist. Karina Yebra - 12 points, eight digs, five kills, and three assists. Claire Valdez - six kills, and three blocks. Linda Hesles - 16 digs. Kiana Ruiz - five digs.
Tuesday’s win improves EPHS’s district record to 9-3, and 23-12 overall.
Head Coach Lucinda Hooper Gloria applauded the leadership of her experienced players for the Lady Eagles’ overall success this season.
“Our team captains Jamie Donley, Karina Yebra, and Amanda Gonzalez have been contributors on the offensive side of the ball, along with Vivian Ramirez, Claire Valdez, and Riane Garcia,” Gloria said. “Defensively Camille Pina, Linda Hesles, and Kiana Ruiz have all had big games throughout the season.”
Gloria also pointed at her team’s persistence, hustle and chemistry as big cogs for this season’s victories.
“The fact that we swept United and split with both Alexander and Del Rio were major events for us,” Gloria said. “We might not be the tallest or hardest hitting team around. But when it comes down to having each others backs and playing as a team, our kids step up. They spent time during the summer at team building camps and that has paid off.”
At press time, details of the Lady Eagles opening playoff game were not available.

The Eagle Pass Eagles squared off in a showdown for the ages as they both bolted out to a 16-16 tie at the half after the Longhorns won the toss and elected to receive to only gain three in their opening possession and proceeded to three and out giving the Eagles the ball on the 43. DeShawn Franklin broke off a significant run which took him deep into Longhorn territory to the one yard line, however a holding call brought the play back. The Eagles would not be denied on this night and they fought their way back to the on where Ty Chisum was able to haul it in for the initial Eagle score, but it would be called back by the officials for illegal procedure. Chisum then handed off to Franklin who headed for the right side of the United Defense when he handed it off to RJ Ruiz who showed some passing skills hitting Chisum in the end zone for the third Eagle TD, but this TOO was called back on a personal foul and brought back to the 16 yet again.

The CC Winn Mavericks had to work from behind to try to catch up to Isaac Cabello's United South Panthers as the Panthers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead early in the game and a botched snap gave the ball back to the Panthers with little time left on the clock before the half. This is where Cabello found daylight to scamper into the endzone for the 21-0 lead at the break. United South received the second half kickoff and proceeded to matriculate down the field, but Carlos Cerezo jumped a post pattern thrown into the endzone for the interception.
