The Eagle Pass High School girls’ softball team met the San Marcos Lady Rattlers on the field for Game 1 of the UIL 2014 Girls Softball State Championship Softball Regional Semifinals on Thursday night. After an adrenaline-pumping 7 inning battle, the Eagles were unable to overcome a late Lady Rattler rally in the top of the seventh losing the game 2-1 in a game that couldn't have been any closer, you had to be there to witness how good of a high school softball game this was with two big time hurlers in the circle in Rattler ace Victoria Vasquez and Lady Eagle ace Cat De La Cruz.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) —

The veteran San Antonio Spurs showed Portland a few things about succeeding in the playoffs. The biggest lesson was how not to panic when an All-Star goes down.

Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard each scored 22 points, and San Antonio overcame an injury to Tony Parker to close out the Western Conference semifinals with a 104-82 victory on Wednesday night.

Patty Mills scored 18 points and Tim Duncan had 16 points and eight rebounds for San Antonio, which had four blowout victories in the five-game series.

It's the third straight conference finals appearance for San Antonio, which lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to the Miami Heat in last season's NBA Finals.

San Antonio, which had the NBA's best record, will await the winner of the series between Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Clippers. The Thunder have a 3-2 lead.

With the NBA Playoffs in full swing and practically all of South Texas coming down with Spurs Fever, the Eagle Pass Police Department is taking the celebration of Law Enforcement Week to a completely new level. Sgt. Orlando Escareño informed The News Gram that he and his colleagues took on the challenge of seeking out the most athletic of their brethren to compete in a three-point basketball shootout.

Escareño and EPPD Squad D made the invitation to all officers to test their shooting skills in this three point shootout for prizes generously donated by two local businesses as well as the Honorable Francisco Martinez, Municipal Judge himself. First prize took home a $100.00 Wal-Mart Supercenter Gift Card. Coming in second may not have been to shabby as the runner-up took home a tool set and tool box donated by Tractor Supply, (Let's hope the fightin' officers of the EPPD didn't miss on purpose to get their hands on the tools!), and third prize would allow one participant to be able to take the Mrs. to supper at Chili's thanks to Judge Martinez. Winners of the contest will be announced at the annual banquet on Friday.

As the Eagles were wrapping up their series against Harlingen South across town at Tejada, they returned the favor to the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and their fans to support them in their bid to win two games to advance to the Regional Semis back at the Spring Sports Complex. Coac Ruiz' Lady Eagles showed the determination and the will to win that they have shown time and time again when their backs are against the wall to come back in their 2 out of 3 game series against the #8 ranked Edinburgh North Lady Bobcats on Saturday. The Lady Eagles laced up their spikes on Saturday morning and had no mercy in coming back in Game 2 to paste a 15-0 shellacking of the Valley Cats with the bottom of the EP lineup coming through as Sammy Fuentes, Nina Flores and Claudia Cruz came through with big time hits to produce runs and Vivian Ramirez plated three with her home run in the second inning according to Coach Ricky Ruiz.

The Eagle Pass Eagles took care of business on Saturday by knocking off the Harlingen South Hurricanes by a score of 3-2 to advance to the Regional Quarter Finals to face Edinburgh North this weekend at Veteran's Field.

Tony Galvan went the distance for the Burnt Orange and White and the Eagle 'O' gave him the run support he needed to get the job done.

Head Coach Reynol Mendoza was in Laredo on Monday as five of his finest were signing national letters of intent with the Laredo Community College Palominos, however he informed The News Gram that they would be squaring off with the Cougars on Friday at 7:30 at Veteran's.  Games 2 and 3 will be on Saturday at 10:30 AM and at 1:30 PM if necessary.

Once this game was in the books, it was the boys' turn to come out and support the girls at the Spring Sports Complex as they too showed the determination and the will to win that they have shown time and time again when their backs are against the wall to come back in their 2 out of 3 game series against the #8 ranked Edinburgh North Lady Bobcats on Saturday.

Coach Coca Ruiz' Lady Eagles laced up their spikes on Saturday morning and had no mercy in coming back in Game 2 to paste a 15-0 shellacking of the Valley Cats with the bottom of the EP lineup coming through as Sammy Fuentes, Nina Flores and Claudia Cruz came through with big time hits to produce runs and Vivian Ramirez plated three with a home run in the second inning according to Coach Ricky Ruiz.  Melanie Mendoza was four for four in this game as well.  Krystal De La Cruz wove her magic and saw limited action in this shortened game that ended by the ten-run-rule.

In Game 3 De La Cruz aided her own cause with a couple of hits, Nina Flores hit well and Mel Mendoza went 3 for 4 in their 9-1 victory that sends them into their fourth round Region IV Semi-Fonal against the San Marcos Rattlers this weekend.
