Eagle Pass High School senior Hector Alvarez and his Eagle Cross Country teammates who have excelled at every level of competition and scored high for Juan Gonzalez' Eagle XC Program placed 9th as a team, at the 2014 UIL State 6A Cross Country Championships held Saturday, November 8th at Settler's Park in Round Rock.

Alvarez averaged a 5:11 mile and placed 22nd out of 150 of the state's best runners with a 16:09.57, defeating racers from state champion Lewisville Hebron, Southlake Carroll, Katy Seven Lakes, Katy Cinco Ranch, Weslaco East, Comal Canyon, Houston Strake Jesuit, College Park, The Woodlands and even Comal Smithson Valley while Del Rio's Paul Delgado ran the race of his life placing eighth with a 15:52.46.

The winner of this very challenging state race was none other than Colleyville Heritage's very own David Strome who turned in a 15:23.81 an average of 4:56 per mile and he is an 11th grader.

"It was a very challenging course which has one of the fastest starts we've ever seen with a 300 meter decline," said avid runner Dr. Hector Alvarez who was there to witness this race, "Right after that, after your muscles are crunched up from the decline, you have a 400 meter incline before it tapers off followed by another 200 meter incline and a snake like part of the course followed by a 100 meter hill, then at the end yet another brutal 300 meter incline."

He feels that most runners will drop anywhere from 20-25 seconds off their best time due to the rigors of the course itself.

Coach Juan Gonzalez' strategy in this race was for his runners to all turn in sub 16:30's in order to have a chance, but according to Alvarez, "The race was crazy and then it was over."

Congratulations are in order for the never-say-die Eagles who bucked the odds, trained even harder and made it to the state meet as a team.

Eagle Pass' Victor Garcia came in 55th, Javier Guevara placed 72nd, Martin Lopez came in right behind in 75th, Bennie Rodriguez came in 79th, Ryan Rodriguez was 129th and Nathan Kowalski was 136th.

Southlake Carroll came in first with 94 places followed by The Woodlands with 105, College Park with 117, katy Seven Lakes with 147, El Paso Eastwood with 158, Keller Timber Creek with 168, Comal Canyon with 176, Lewisville Marcus with 193, Eagle Pass placed ninth in the state with 224 and Houston Strake Jesuit rounded off the top ten teams in the state with 280 places.

The Eagle Pass Eagles were a stop away from moving on to the Texas State High School Playoffs on Friday against the Del Rio Rams.  The amazing thing about the situation was the fact that the Eagle defense got that stop at a most opportune time I might add, with less than three minutes remaining on the clock, but a holding call gave the Del Rio Rams, who trailed the Eagles at the time 14-7 new life.  The Eagles held the Rams to no yards on four incomplete passes from the ten yard line and quarterback Will Ashley basically was throwing the ball away as all his receivers were covered by the Eagle D.

The CC Winn Mavericks, winners of three in a row and tied for fourth place in the new 29-AAAAA, were in Somerset playing the loop-leading Bulldogs in a win and you're in game under the lights.

Under center for the 'Dogs was none other than Koy Detmer, Jr., a Division I prospect and nephew of former Philadelphia Eagle and Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer who many in attendance said was as accurate a passer as they had ever seen throwing pinpoint dimes to his backs and wideouts.

Eagle Pass High School junior Jezabelle Rodriguez who has competed at every level of competition and scored high for Juan Gonzalez' Lady Eagle XC Program experienced another level of competition, some of which are freshmen and sophomores, at the 2014 UIL State 6A Cross Country Championships held Saturday, November 8th at Settler's Park in Round Rock.

Rodriguez came in 75th out of 150 of the state's best runners with an uncharacteristic 19:53.26, as the course itself may have contributed by the challenging times, yet "Belle" as she is known to her coaches and friends kept battling, defeating racers from state champion Lewisville Hebron, Southlake Carroll, Katy Seven Lakes, Katy Cinco Ranch, Comal Canyon, The Woodlands and even Comal Smithson Valley where the top girl's runner in the state Devin Clark is from en route to her first state performance.

The impending opening of the 2014-2015 ABA Basketball season will be tomorrow as your Centex Swarm take on Austin in Austin at 7:30 PM.  The Swarm will be coached by none other than Johnny Moore, whose famous number 00 is retired and sits in the rafters of the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

Moore played alongside Spurs greats such as George Gervin and David Robinson in the Silver & Black and is bringing with him a load of collegiate talent who have joined the team in hopes of one day donning an NBA uniform such as three University of Arkansas players including Mardracus Wade (6' 3" guard who shoots lights out and can dribble with the best of them) and Rickey Scott (6' 5" Power Forward who has all the tools is big and strong like an Andre Iguadala who can shoot the rock and dunk it on an opponent).

The Eagle Pass Eagles and the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs tangled once again as it would be the last time that Aaron Swain and Ty Chisum would meet in a district tilt.

The Eagle defense had to deal with a balanced offensive attack with experienced QB Aaron Swain spreading the love to several receivers including Travis Allen and Beto Garcia.  Running back CJ Loera was also key in the Bulldog attack as he ate up significant yards on the ground.

The 'Dogs scored first then Chisum used his superior running ability to haul the rock into the endzone in the first quarter to tie the game.

Alexander traded scores with the Eagles and then Chisum hit a streaking Joseph Barrientos on a seven route between two Bulldog defenders when the cornerback committed to taking away routes underneath as Chisum saw this and threw a laser about forty yards on a dime to hit Barrientos in stride for the 60 yard scoring strike to re-tie the game at 14.

Mark Venegas quietly had a good game and as you can see in the picture, he caused significant damage to at least two Bulldog defenders' ankles juking them almost out of their spikes on this big gainer.

It was still a game with five minutes remaining in the third quarter when both defenses stepped it up and stopped each other's offenses before Alexander proceeded to score on their last four possessions pulling away 49-14.

In another key matchup, Del Rio edged United South 14-13 further complicating playoff scenarios in District 29-AAAAAA.

Laredo United and LBJ who are both undefeated at 3-0 tangled on Friday.

The Eagles travel to Del Rio next week for their final district game.

There are many playoff scenarios that can pan out between press time and next week, but Eric Villaseñor's New Look CC Winn Mavericks have run the gauntlet of playing Laredo competition in this district having to do so to keep their playoff hopes alive and come out solid after having come back from a 7-0 deficit to knock off the Laredo Nixon Mustangs 21-7 on Friday night, Homecoming Night for CC Winn High School.

The senior walk after the game was that much sweeter as Juan Elizondo, Deion Alonso, Chris Aranda and Max Vallejo took it all in after having given a Maverick fan base that has gone through some tough times in the past eight seasons a night to remember.

"We're just very proud to make history and to give this victory to Maverick Nation, but it's far from over.  Thank goodness that we're peaking at the right time," said Head Coach Eric Villaseñor.

The Mavericks have broken off three consecutive complete football games which is all we can ask from our players in these critical times of the season.

The Mustangs drew first blood just before halftime with a nice pitch and catch to go up 7-0.

Deion Alonso was denied after a magnificent 40 yard run when officials called holding on the Mav offense.  Then CC Winn mounted another decent drive which saw them get a big time catch from Big Joe Rodriguez on a 3rd and 19 to keep the drive alive.

Rodriguez actually scored on that drive, but it was called back for illegal formation/  Then Neon Deion Alonso made his presence felt once more by hauling the rock into the endzone for the initial Maverick score.

Chris Aranda scored in the fourth quarter on a 27 yard run which ended in him walking into the endzone behind the blocking of the solid Mav offensive line.

As Nixon attempted to make a comeback late in the fourth quarter, Max vallejo intercepted a Mustang pass and took to the house for the final Maverick score, CC Winn 21, Nixon 7.

The CC Winn Lady Mavericks came back from Casablanca Golf Course in Laredo with their first victory on the young season behind an exceptional performance from #1 player Paloma Garcia Zua-Zua who rode an impressive 83 all the way into the clubhouse on Day 2 to give her the overall tournament championship.  Garcia Zua-Zua had shot a loop-leading 87 on Day 1 advising the competition that the Lady Mavericks were going to be serious contenders on this day. Her five pars and two birdies on the second day and her 15 greens in regulation were more than enough to distance her from the competition.
