Monday, August 8, at approximately 5:00 p.m. a disturbance occurred at the Tom Bowles Detention Center.
“There were four or five inmates involved in the disturbance,” said Maverick County Chief Deputy Robert De Leon. It was only ten minutes from the time the brawl started until inmates were put back in to their cells, but in the short time officers were pushed, and a couple of them punched.
“The inmates were sprayed with OC spray to be able to control the situation fast,” said De Leon. “Everyone was checked by the nurse there in the jail when it was over, and there were only minor injuries to the officers and I believe the inmates had just some redness from the spray.”
Inmates Marcelino Rodriguez and Manuel Talamantes were both given additional charges for assaulting peace officers.
The incident is still under investigation, said De Leon, and could result in further charges to Rodriguez and Talamantes as well as other inmates.
De Leon also mentioned that the sheriff’s department had arrested approximately 15 people with outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court.
“Three or four were arrested at the port of entry and the others were arrested by the deputies conducting traffic stops due to minor violations. The driver or the passengers came out wanted in Maverick County,” said De Leon.
