When one sees or hears the story of the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, it goes without saying that they have achieved a level of tennis which may be unparalleled for many years to come as they have combined for over ten grand slam titles and even more as a doubles team. They have even taken two of the last three gold medals at the Olympics and there seems to be no end in sight for how much more they can achieve. What many people may not know is that their father Richard, took great steps to hone their skills and prepare them to achieve the goals they themselves set out to achieve without having played on the junior USTA circuit. In Eagle Pass, we may have the next coming of Venus Williams right in our very own back yard in 8 year-old Stela Sifuentes, the daughter of Karla (Head Tennis Coach at CC Winn High School) and Tony Sifuentes.

-Poteet, TX

The CC Winn Mavericks continue notching victories across South Texas as they most recently traveled to Poteet to participate in the Poteet Invitational, albeit two key players short, nevertheless they were able to muster up three big wins to come away with the tournament championship.

In the first game of the tourney, the Mavericks squared off with a very competitive Nixon Mustang squad who jumped out to a first quarter lead and led 25-22 at halftime.

The Mavs came back in the third quarter to outscore the 'Stangs 21-16 and then secured the lead in the fourth behind some quality scores and some stingy defense to take a close 55-52 victory in their opening game on Friday despite being outshot by Nixon 49% to 38%.

Rogelio Roque and Adrian Jimenez led all scorers with 19 and 18 points respectively.
