The Lord will have Angels in the Outfield

Daniel Medellin to be lain to rest

Catches last victory before falling ill in PN

When the 2009 CC Winn Mavericks began the season in early February that year, they did so on their own practice field, a field which Morris Libson III meticulously kept weed and thorn-free daily and a field which may have been the best in Eagle Pass at the time as both Fort Duncan Park, which is now Moncada Park and the Student Activity Center was barely being built, so this was a veritable field of dreams for the Mavericks. This reporter remembers seeing a big-time home run, one of the longest I've seen in high school baseball by #11 Jonathan Elizondo, a moon-shot which is still in orbit on that day. Another thing this team possessed was a double-play combination which goes back to Little League as this group of players started early and many a coach in our Little Leagues and Babe Ruth Leagues can attest to as #8 Roly Ruiz was at short and #2 Danny Medellin was at second base. This hard-hitting trio of players will now be the Angels in the Outfield for the CC Winn Mavericks from this day forward as the latter left this earth on Sunday after catching his last game in a winning cause at El Decimo, Campo Edmundo Gomez in the Colonia Bravo in Piedras Negras. Medellin was catching for Los Comicos and approximately ten minutes after the game was over, he collapsed and began to show signs of what was later determined to be a series of massive heart attacks. Other local players were on hand who all attempted to render aid to Medellin, who according to witnesses seemed to be coming out of what was determined to be the first of three attacks before relapsing just before an ambulance arrived to transport him to the Dr. Salvador Chavarría General Hospital where he later died. This shocking turn of events has left the CC Winn Family devastated yet once again as his brother Jesus is a standout, All-District player for the Maverick Baseball Program and was playing with his own team at the Estadio 123 that same day. Danny was the kind of kid who had a contagious smile and a personality that all of his many many friends can attest to as being the kind of friend who you could always turn to in times of need. He was there for both his brothers and so should we be there for him. Funeral services for Danny are set for today at 2:00 PM at Sacred heart Church on Williams St. Interment will be at the Catholic Cemetery. Services will be handled by Yeager-Barrera Mortuary. Danny is preceeded in death by his loving father Jose Ricardo Medellin. He is survived by one sister, Brenda Medellin, three brothers, Jose Ricardo Medellin, Jr., Julio Alejandro Medellin and Jesus Orlando Medellin. He is also survived by his loving mother Yolanda. Mavericks Assemble, we must be there for the Medellin Family in this their time of most need. Godspeed and God Bless Daniel Bernardo Medillin, in our hearts always. You will truly be missed.

The CC Winn Mavericks mounted a 93 yard drive at the end of their game against the Medina Valley Panthers down 14-7 in the second half with less than two minutes to go in the game as Juan Elizondo and the Mavs showed the never-say-die attitude that Eric Villaseñor and his staff have instilled in them since Day 1 as he orchestrated a masterful drive using passes to the sidelines to Julio Ruiz, Brandon Sanchez and Ramiro Valdez to keep valuable seconds on the clock as the Panthers milked the clock on every offensive possession with the lead but the Mav defense made stop after stop in the second half of play to give their offense a chance to make a comeback.
