Two youths were apprehended on Wednesday afternoon after a high-speed chase took Sheriff’s Department personnel deep into the outskirts of the county in support of the US Border Patrol. According to Sheriff Tom Schmerber, who was gracious enough to address the issue from Austin as he was about to attend a conference dealing with the possibility of opening the new highway to Laredo, Schmerber informed The News Gram that as far as he knew, border patrol agents were in pursuit of a suspicious vehicle coming in on Highway 277. When notified of the chase, Sheriff's officials responded to assist. When they were seen by the vehicle, it proceeded to turn around and flee from law enforcement officials until they reached Quemado and got off the vehicle. A chase began on foot and officers were able to apprehend an unidentified juvenile. When officers conducted a search of the 2001 Totyota 4Runner, 417 Lbs. of a green leafy substance which upon closer inspection was believed to be marijuana was discovered inside and confiscated by Sheriff Department personnel. The case remains under investigation.
U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FILES MOTION TO DISMISS WITHOUT PREJUDICE CHARGES AGAINST FORMER MAVERICK COUNTY PURCHASING AGENT JUAN CARLOS MONCADA
In Del Rio today, the United States Attorney’s Office filed a motion to dismiss without prejudice charges against former Maverick County Purchasing Agent Juan Carlos Moncada.
In October, Moncada was indicted for two counts of wire fraud and one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds in case number DR12-CR-1613. Since the indictment was returned, the Government has continued its investigation into this case and has determined that all three counts against Moncada should be dismissed. After indictment, IBC Bank advised that the specific checks used to pay for the forklift at issue did not utilize interstate wire facilities when they were deposited and therefore did not affect interstate commerce. Also after indictment, multiple witnesses exculpated Moncada and informed the Government that Moncada had no knowledge of the scheme to steal funds from the county. Although the Government had probable cause to support an indictment, information developed thereafter that leaves the Government without sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the elements of the offenses charged against Moncada in the indictment.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) conducted a raid on a local home/establishment located on Main Street between Commercial and Ryan St. on Tuesday morning. The exact location of the raid was 165 Mian Street. The establishment apparently being a window tint business.
According to a credible source from the EPPD, the department was asked to provide officers to support federal authorities in said search at approximately 7:00 A.M. Other than this, local officials were not able to release any official information.
When The News Gram arrived on the scene, it was a large presence of law enforcement vehicles, officials and personnel while the owner/resident of what looks to be a home converted into a window tint business was awaiting the results of the search.
FBI officials were on hand at the premises throughout the morning as late as 11:00 A.M. Boxes of confiscated materials were being brought out of the site.
As of yet, the initial findings have not indicated the reason why the FBI has targeted this particular location. Further information and details of the case are forthcoming as the case remains under investigation.
