against the San Antonio Southwest Dragons. The game began tightly contested but it was the Mavericks who were able to get on the board first as Alexis Esquivel was able to break away and score to put the Mavs up 1-0.
The game then went back and forth when finally the Dragons were able to score and tie the game. What followed was hard to imagine but in the span of 15 minutes the Dragons were able to put up 3 goals and it seemed the Mavericks could not find their rhythm.
The first half ended in a heap of frustration, as it seemed the game had slipped away. But the Mavs ultimately got things in order and made some adjustments in the second half.
They came out motivated and were able to get a quick goal to solidify their belief in a comeback. The Dragons played tough in response but could not stop the next CC Winn goal. “The Dragons, recognizing the momentum was in our favor and the fact that we were physically wearing them down, opted to play overly defensive to prevent the tying goal.” “Good play in the game came from Alex Flores, Luis Sugaki, Jose Rodriguez, Jose Herrera and Angel Salinas. Felipe Flores, Ernesto Fuentes and Alexis Esquivel, Erik Tarin and Ricky Gutierrez contributed good play offensively.”
As hard as the Mavs tried, the tying goal would not come but they left everything on the field trying.
The final score was 3-4 in favor of the SW Dragons, giving them the District 28- AAAAA Championship.
“We play Jefferson in the first round of the playoffs Friday at Alamo Stadium at 8:00 PM.”
