“Medina Valley is always a tough opponent at home and they were fighting for their playoff chances,” said Coach Christian Rodriguez.
The Mavs jumped into action early and took it to the Panthers as they created some early opportunities to score, but could not exactly connect to score the goal, hitting the crossbar a few times.
The Panthers settled in and were able to match up with the Mavs and managed to draw a tie at the end of the half at 0-0.
The Panthers were emboldened and began gaining confidence as the game wore on, but the Mavs kept up the pace. It was on one of their attacks that Felipe Flores fed Alexis Esquivel for a shot on goal that was redirected by a defender out of reach of the keeper and into the goal for an own-goal.
The remainder of the match was played tightly contested as the Panthers fought to tie the game, but the
Mavericks denied opportunities and then slowly controlled the ball and the gameuntil the end with the final score being 1-0.
Good play in the game came from Erik Cantu, Luis Sugaki, Alex Flores, Jose Herrera and Angel Salinas from the defensive positions. Felipe Flores, Adrian Suarez and Alexis Esquivel, Alfonso Martinez and Ricky Gutierrez contributed good
play offensively.
Jesus Gonzalez completed the shutout at keeper.
