Ibarra Places 2nd at Uvalde Invitational

Diego Ibarra overcame the elements and a seven shot

deficit to come back and place second at the Uvalde Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 1st and 2nd.

On a Par 71 course, Ibarra struggled on Day 1, hitting only six fairways and nine greens in regulation with three up and downs and 36 putts for an opening round of 79. On Day 2 he improved hitting 12 fairways and 11 greens with three up and downs with 34 putts for a Day 2 75 to overcome the second place player Zuel Conoly from Brackettville.

“On #17 I hit a 3 wood and left it 56 yards from the pin, then hit a 62 degree sand wedge to five feet from the hole for a downhill birdie on Day 2,” said the 2018 state Qualifier.

His up and downs were: on Day 1 a chip and one putt on a Par 4 on #6, a chip and one putt for par on the Par 5 #11 after an errant drive and a chip and one putt on #13.

On Day 2 he had an up and down on the Par 3 #8, the Par 4 #12 and a chip and one putt of par on a Par 4 and then a chip and one putt for par on #14.

“I hit more greens on Day 2,” said Ibarra, “It was a little windy, the weather was worse than the first day. I just tried to make birdies, but the leader was seven shots ahead. It was stand-up competition, one from Brackettville and the other from Alexander, but it’ll get me ready for district for sure.”

Laredo Alexander won first place as a team, Eagle Pass High School came in second and Eagle Pass High’s JV came in third. Pleasanton placed
