in a pivotal in- district match up. The Cardinals have always made for a tough game for the Mavs, since their clashes have gone down to the wire. In the previous match up the Cardinals squeaked out a win in Eagle Pass by the score of 3-2.
The first half of this game saw a very motivated Cardinal team that was pressing quickly and frustrating the Maverick rhythm.
The Mavs were able to snuff out the offense as well for the Cardinals and the half ended in a 0-0 tie.
The second half opened up with Southside finding a score on a breakdown of the Mav defense. The frustrations continued for the Mavs as the Cardinals were able to contain the Mavs and especially Alexis Esquivel, as well as Felipe Flores.
It was only a matter of time before Esquivel would be able to break out and despite having the defense surrounding him, he was able to break loose and score two quick goals that not only tied the game but put the Mavericks up.
The Cardinals did not give up, and continued to press and open up scoring opportunities. In a great show of skill, Felipe Flores was able to connect from long distance to drop the ball into the net over the head of the Cardinal keeper and put the game away. The Mavs won by the score of 3-1.
Good play in the game came from Erik Cantu, Luis Sugaki, Alex Flores, and Angel Salinas from the defensive positions. Felipe Flores, Alfonso Martinez, Alexis Esquivel, Erik Tarin and Jason Estrada contributed good play offensively. Josue Hernandez came in for the injured Jesus Gonzalez, and had a great game at the goalie position.
The Winn Maverick Boys hosted the Uvalde Coyotes on Tuesday night as they celebrated Senior’s Night. The game was quickly dominated by the Mavs as they never allowed the Coyotes any breathing room. The Mavs controlled every facet of the game and started scoring early and often.
The scoring in the game came from Jose Escobedo, Ernesto Fuentes, Avery Martinez, Alejandro Gonzalez, Alexis Esquivel with three goals apiece and Felipe Flores with an amazing four goals. The defensive unit held up and turned away the Coyotes and help to ramp up the offense, while goalkeepers Josue Hernadez and returning senior Armando Villarreal combined for the shutout.
