This week’s feature presents two players who gave their teams the best chance to win, but in baseball, you play the game until
there is a clear winner. Like Yogi Berra said, "It's not over till it's over."
CC WInn’s Brandon Villaseñor was just that player. He held the Eagle Pass Eagles in check for the better part of six innings
with a crisp fastball and an even better curveball that left Eagle batters stunned in the box; striking out 10, leaving the game 1-1
in the sixth with a couple of his runners on, but a timely hit by our other Player Of
The Week, Victor Perry changed all that. With the Mavericks up 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Perry
hit a three-run double to lift the Eagles to a 4-3 victory. I think we're all going to enjoy this feature this
season as we've added a couple of questions to the questionnaire that are going to shed a little more light
on what it is that make these players tick.
First up is Eagle Outfielder Victor Perry.
Player Name: Victor Perry
Player # 15
Player Position: Outfield Team: Ep
Parents names: Sonia and Victor.
Who do you consider to be your biggest influences? (Could be your parents, but also include a professional baseball player or national figure)
My dad. He’s always pushing me to be my best and to be the best person I can possibly be. My mom’s my motivation. She motivates
me to make her proud. She motivates me to work hard. In the MLB I would have to say George Springer of the Houston Astros because he’s an elite centerfielder,
he’s well respected and he can rake.
When did you start playing ball? Outline your past experience and the positions you’ve played.
When I was four. I’ve played third, shortstop and first base. When I was twelve we went to state for the first time in two years. State was in
San Angelo that year. We played Universal from Corpus, who went on to the World Series that year.
Do you have a ritual or superstition before a game? Yeah. My ritual is I eat Chick-Fil- A, get a Sonic slush and listen to
the same songs before every game.
Is there a particular significance to your jersey number? It was my dad’s number and my grandpa’s number.
What are your goals this season? Teamwise, I’m looking for us to go farther this year in the playoffs and to reclaim our district title again
and go back-to-back. Individually, my goal is to improve as a player, to recieve first team all-district honors as an outfielder and to pursue
playing college baseball.
Who's your favorite MLB team? The Houston Astros.
Who’s your favorite player? George Springer.
College team? UT.
What do you consider to be your season highlight so far? Why? I hit a three-run double to win the game last night against Winn, but there are going to be more.
What’s your favorite movie? Nacho Libre.
What’s on your Ipod? Rap like Drake, Travis Scott, Future and Gunna.
What’s your favorite food? Chinese.
What are your plans after Graduation? To go to college and pursue my education and play college baseball.
Major? Pre-Law.
What does it take for a baseball team to be successful? Unity, discipline, determination and a lot of work.
Finally, give me some advice to a kid playing baseball for the first time. Just have fun. Baseball’s just a game. There will be more times
that you will fail than you will succeed, but work hard and the results will show. Never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.
Next up is CC Winn Maverick Pitcher Brandon Villaseñor.
Player Name: Brandon Villaseñor
Player #1
Player Position: Pitcher Team: CCW
Parents names: Margarita Cabrera and David Maldonado.
Who do you consider to be your biggest influences? (Could be your parents, but also include a professional baseball player or national figure)
My mom. Because she’s strong and she helps me and my brothers. She’s my motivation. Everything I do, I do it for her. In the major leagues, it
would have to be George Springer. I like the way he plays.
When did you start playing ball? Outline your past experience and the positions you’ve played. When I was like five years old. We
almost made it to the world series in 2013, we were in Louisiana and we lost twice and we were right there to go to the world series when I was 13.
Do you have a ritual or superstition before a game? When I pitch, I always make the letter “J” and a cross on the dirt behind the mound for a guy I always
looked up to, Jorge Elias Gomez.
Is there a particular significance to your jersey number? It was the only jersey that fit me. Ha ha! But I think it's cool.
What are your goals this season? To be district champs. Individually, I would like to get better at pitching and in the outfield.
Who's your favorite MLB team? The Houston Astros.
Who’s your favorite player? George Springer.
College team? TCU.
What do you consider to be your season highlight so far? Why? I think it was against the Eagles last night, but when I faced them on
February 12th, I threw two innings against them and struck out six.
What’s your favorite movie? The Sandlot.
What’s on your Ipod? Rap like Drake. My favorite song is “Going Bad”, I also like Anuel-AA, Bad Bunny and Migos.
What’s your favorite food? Comida Ranchera.
