and while they drew first blood in
the match, Nixon made a strong
comeback to take the match 3-1.
Coach Hugo Garcia said
that it was a great center pass that
opened the scoring for Eagle Pass.
“We started strong as we got a deep
ball deep into Nixons territory and
earned a corner Kick . Maritza
Gonzalez played a perfect ball into
the box that Mariana Perez headed
into the net to gives us an early 1-0
lead.”
Nixon came right back as they
played a mistake by the Lady
Eagles and cashed it in to tie it at 1.
“The game see-sawed
back and forth as Nixon peppered
our goalkeeper Yoanna Velasquez.
She stood proud and turned them
away (she played with the flu).
Near the end of the half Nixon’s
strikers beat our mids and ripped a
shot into the net to give them the
lead at half 1-2.”
Garcia praised his team,
who kept the match close throughout
the second half.
“In the second half we battled
them and we came up short on
many occasions as we ripped a
shot of the goalie’s hand and it kept
bouncing and it hit the inside of the
pole and bounced out. We kept the
pressure on. Finally with about 8
minutes left, Nixon’s striker iced
the game by scoring her second
goal to make it 1-3.”
“We had corners and direct
shots that we didn’t take advantage
of. Mia Gonzalez played a good
game and the rest of the Ladies put
up a valiant effort.”
“We played with energy
and defensively sound, everybody
getting a chance to play. We were
down to 3 subs as we are nursing
injuries and illnesses. We just need
more time and live game situations,
we are playing with
