Titans for the first time.
The blistering cold
could not cool down the
offensive outpouring the
Mavs have been relishing.
The Titans, a very defensive
minded team, crowded their
end of the field and tried to
make it difficult for the
Mavs to move the ball,
attempting to frustrate them
into making mistakes.
It was the Mavs that
forced the Titans into a mistake,
as the Titans possessed
the ball and went on the
attack they created space
behind their defense and
when the Mavs recovered
the ball, Alexis Esquivel and
Felipe Flores exploited their
errors with some fabulous
runs to the goal.
After fustrating the
Titans all game long with
their good play, Esquivel
Flores and Erik Tarin combined
for a 4-1 win over the
Legacy Titans. The rest of
the team combined with
some spectacular play on the
ball to keep possession and
keep control of the game.
“We had good play
from Alex Flores, Ricardo
Fernandez and Erik Cantu
from the defensive positions,”
stated Coach
Christian Rodriguez.
Then on Tuesday,
the Mavericks hosted the
undefeated district leaders,
the Southwest Dragons.
The Dragons, who
came down from 6A classification,
had been making
quick work of their district
opponents, but the Mavs,
after struggling early in district
play, have been ramping
up their play and finally
playing at a high level both
offensively and defensively.
The game was tightly
contested throughout, but
it was the Mavericks that
opened up the scoring as
Alexis Esquivel found the
back of the net on a nice
header coming from a cross
from Angel Salinas.
The Dragons did not
waver and found a response
and tied the game at 1-1.
Later Esquivel was able to
find a way to score another
goal and put the Mavs up
again 2-1.
The match remained
tight as the Mavs kept the
lead, but the Dragons stayed
in the game. The Mavs
scored again and went up 3-
1 but the Dragons answered
and pulled to 3-2.
The Mavericks then
took control as they scored
two more goals in the second
half and the Dragons only
one. Alexis
Esquivel scored three goals
while Felipe Flores scored
two goals. The final score
was 5-3.
