Lady Longhorns on Tuesday, and Angie Escamilla led the Lady Mavericks to an 8-5 route of the Orange
and White after, according to Assistant Coach Corina Benavides, the Winn JV took out United 16-1 in
the game prior. Things are looking up for the Silver and Black this season.
In the bottom of the second, Ariana Soto gets on with a base hit and goes to second on a wild pitch
by Laila Rangel. Mia Uriegas went down swinging but sister Briana Soto brought in the first Mav run
with a blooper into right, and Courtesy runner Ariana Benavidez scored later on another wild pitch to
make the score 2-0.
In the top of the third, Longhorn second baseman Eva Garcia gets on, on a fielder’s choice, then comes
around to score on an RBI single by Rangel, 2-1 Mavs.
In the third it was Kiana Diaz who led off with a walk, Kayla Sifuentes got on on an error and Ana Lopez,
Martha Garcia and Briana Soto all had RBI singles and scored while Uriegas also goton and came
around to score to make the score 8-1. It was in the top of the sixth that Escamilla ran into a little trouble
giving up two singles to Kelly Salinas and Kayla Ramos, then Amy Flores came in to pitch, striking out
Nissi Sandoval, but a hit by Valerie Sandoval would score two and Sandoval and Kiana Ramos
would eventually come in to score on fielder’s choices, but it was a little too little, a little too late and the
Lady Mavericks would take a sound 8-5 victory in this inauguaral game of the season.
