Maverick Soccer Team waer
victorious in their last two
matches against both Uvalde
and Medina Valley. On
Friday, the Mavs knocked
off the uvalde Coyotes 3-0
and according to Head
Coach Christian Rodriguez,
they were looking to get
back into the district mix,
“The Coyotes were tough
and made things tough for
us,” said the coach, “We
looked to open up the scoring,
but just kept missing the
goal.”
A break finally
came when Jose Solis headed-
in a cross off of a corner
kick to give the Mavericks
the lead. The half ended at 1-
0 and the Coyotes came out
with a lot of energy to score
the equalizer, but the Mavs
matched the intensity and
were finally able to pull
away as Alexis Esquivel
scored to make it 2-0.
Later on another
push, Esquivel crossed the
ball into the box and a
Uvalde defender ended up
putting in the net for an own
goal that made the final
score 3-0.
“We got good play
from Alex Flores, Luis
Sugaki, Felipe Flores and
Ricky Gutierrez. Jesus
Gonzalez and Armando
Villarreal combined for the
shutout from goal.”
Then on Tuesday,
the Mavericks hosted the
Medina Valley Panthers.
The Mavs needed to stay up
in the points race and needed
a win against the Panthers to
pull into a tie for fourth
place in District 28-
AAAAA.
The match started
fast as the Mavericks quickly
began to look for the
opening score of the match.
The first goal of the match
finally came as Alexis
Easquivel dribbled into the
box and took a shot that the
goalie blocked into the waiting
boot of Felipe Flores
who took the shot and
scored.
Flores had a hat
trick in this match scoring
three goals. Esquivel had
two.
Good play came
from Alex Flores, Jose
Herrera and Jose Rodriguez
from the defensive positions.
Flores, Alfonso
Martinez and Esquivel contributed
the offense while
Jesus Gonzalez and
Armando Villarreal combined
for the shutout.
