The Eagle Pass Eagles took advantage of the holiday break to get some playing time in at a major basketball tournament in Boerne on Thursday and Friday.

In the initial game of the tournament, the Eagles squared-off with the Boerne Champion Chargers in what was a highly competitive game between two formidable foes.  Champion, of course, is a premier player in a very strong AAAA district which includes Boerne, Fredricksburgh, Medina Valley, Kerrville Tivy and Alamo Heights.

After the dust settled, the Chargers came away with a narrow 65-53 win over the visiting Burnt Orange and White.

David Even led the Eagles in scoring, RJ Ruiz had a hard-fought 13, Cesar Hernandez scored five, Fabian Peña four, and Johnny Garza, Bernardo Menchaca and Miguel Sanchez dropped two points apiece.

For the home-standing Chargers, Walt Wehmeyer had a 21 point game leading all scorers, Martin Birdsong dropped 19, Jason Pollack had 12, Michael Lewis five, Sean Leonard four, Gerald Butler and Casthana Mocygumba two points each.

The Eagles also played a very long San Angelo Lakeview squad and played them extremely well with five players in double figures as David Even, RJ Ruiz and Ty Chisum with double doubles, Even with 13 points and 10 boards, Ruiz had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Chisum with 10 points and 12 boards.

Miguel Sanchez had 14 points and five rebounds and Fabian Peña contributed five points and 11 big rebounds on both sides of the court.

On Friday night, the Eagles squared off with San Antonio Christian and it all came down to a last second three-point attempt which banged off the rim as Christian came away with a 65-62 win.

Johnny Garza rebounded extremely well with a fantastic 21 point performance and David Even continued his consistency with 15.  Peña had 8, RJ Ruiz dropped 7,and  Menchaca  and Ty Chisum contributed three points apiece.

"Every team we faced were loaded with height," said Head Coach Neto Reyes, "Their centers were 6' 7".  The competition was awesome and it was a great learning experience for our kids."

The Eagles face Del Rio January 8th in their next District 29-AAAAA game in the Queen City.
