The Head Coach of perennial District 29-AAAAAA playoff contenders, the Laredo United Longhorns, David Sanchez has enjoyed some pretty successful seasons these past years including reaching the Regional Finals the last two years against the Judson Rockets and the Austin Westlake Chaparrals, but as Coach Sanchez said at the onset of our interview on Tuesday, they "Thought their season was going well but then we had two heartbreakers," namely the 18-17 loss to United South and the 33-29 loss to visiting San Antonio Southwest last week.

"We dominated both games, but in the first we fumbled the ball reaching for the goal line and lost by a point, then against Southwest, we had a battle going where we traded touchdowns and had the ball with 5:00 remaining. Our goal was to drive down the field so that they wouldn't get it again,” said Sanchez. “It came down to a 4th and 5, we threw a pass, our kid was open and their kid made a hell of a play and batted the ball, our receiver didn't make the catch. They proceeded to run out the clock, so we've lost two tough ones."

When asked about his players in the skill positions, Coach Sanchez said, "We think we have a good football team, we have a young quarterback who's going through some growing pains, but he's done well for us as a sophomore."

He's talking about Quarterback Wayo Huerta who has had some great offensive games these past two weeks. Coach also mentioned a balanced group of receivers including junior Jorge Murillo, senior Chris Salinas, senior Chris Fine and senior Jacob Morales.

They also play behind a good offensive line which includes three returning starters in junior Left Tackle Mauricio Rodriguez, senior Center Hiram Escontrias, junior Right Tackle JJ Garcia, senior Left Guard Jerry Hermosillo and sophomore Right Guard Eduardo Mireles.

On defense the Longhorns will bring senior Outside Linebacker Chris Casarez, junior Outside Linebacker David Macias, senior Nose Tackle Brandon Brondo, junior Defensive Tackle Chris Martinez and Cornerbacks Ivan Alaniz and Oscar Villarreal.

About the Eagles, Sanchez had the following to add, "Obviously, they're much improved. They're real good offensively and defensively. They're playing real good football right now and playing with lots of confidence. I think they've been real consistent," he closed, "I'm proud of what they've done so far."
