The team won their second consecutive District 29-AAAAAA Championship on Saturday with Shanya Luna crossing the finish line as Individual District Champion with an outstanding 18:23, just ahead of her teammate Monica Rivera who posted an equally impressive 18:31 at the Casablanca Municipal Golf Course in The Gateway City.
The District Championship Team of Luna, Rivera, Andrea Garcia (7th, 19:21), Jackeline Garza (10th, 19:36), Jenna Roiz (21st, 20:18), Karina Fernandez (27th, 21:48) and Ana Cristina Alvarez (29th, 21:02) squared off with the entire district field of competition and will advance to the Region IV Meet in Corpus Christi on Monday, October 23.
The Lady Eagles took first place by a whopping 18 points over runner-up Del Rio (59), third place United (69), fourth place Alexander (98) and fifth place United South (103).
The Eagle Pass Eagle Cross Country Squad had a strong performance from their top two runners Nathan Kowalski and Sergio Hernandez, but the district competition was strong, especially Del Rio who had an equally impressive team performance as our girls did by amassing only 40 points to Eagle Pass' 68 to take the boys' crown in 2017.
Kowalski (2nd, 15:51) and Hernandez (4th, 16:05) kept pace with the leaders throughout the race and had good times showing that the hard work, early morning rises, late afternoons in the hot Eagle Pass sun, and the rigors of team preparation paid off as Eagle Pass was well represented at the race's end. The team of Homar Perez, Ryan Rodriguez, Jose Lugo, Sebastian Villarreal and George Sanchez did all they could to keep the team's score down and to allow the Eagles to come away with the District 29-AAAAAA Runner-up plaque this season.
On another high note, the Eagle freshmen boys also won the District Championship behind the stellar performances of Noah Gonzalez (Individual District Champion, 11:09), Luis Lira (2nd), Jeremiah Smith (3rd), Julian Garza (7th), Jorge Castillo (8th), Ivan Jimenez (9th), Evan Garza (12th) and Kaleb Sanchez (18th).
In the freshman girls category, Eagle Pass' Karla Aguilar won the Individual District Championship with a 14:01. Gabriela Morales placed 3rd and Eileen Marines sixth.
In junior varsity girls, Roxanna Escareño placed 3rd with a 20:57 and Iliana Lopez came in 5th with a 21:19. Briana Vasquez came in right behind her with a 21:52 tenth place finish while Abbigail Solis came in 12th.
In the junior Varsity boys division, four runners broke 20 minutes, Alan Davila placed 7th with a great 17:58 while Sergio Gomez (15th, 18:30), Hector Marines (17th, 18:40) and Shen Milk (25th, 19:06) ran well.
