It came down to the wire this year at the International Border Cup, the annual match play tournament which pits the best golfers from both sides of the border in a three day series of events. Mexico's contingent came away with a narrow 221/2 to 20 1/2 victory after Day 3 which was individual matches head-to-head between the remaining players on both teams.

Orly Rodriguez won the first match on Sunday 1 up on Ways Gonzalez and Steve Luna also came away with a victory having won all his matches this weekend, 2 up in this one against German Zavala. Zavala also played Monico Suke and they halved their match.

Pete Gomez Sr. defeated Mexican Captain Jose Luis Hernandez 5-4 and Apolonio Rodriguez lost to Rodrigo Trigos. USA's Juan Felan halved his match with Jorge Gutierrez on Sunday and Tony Maldonado defeated Hectir Rules by three.

Hector Cerna lost to Gabriel Bustamante by two strokes while Gabby Garcia dropped his match to Oscar Lopez by three. Sergio Brosig defeated Armando Sanchez by three strokes.

It all came down to the final match of the day between USA's Ben Stearns and Mexico's Alex Garza and Garza, with a birdie on 18 with both players tied coming in, gave Mexico the point they needed to seal the victory.

"My team played well. The USAS played well too," said Captain Jose Luis Hernandez, "It was a good tournament with great matches."

"On Day 1 we were losing by two points and we came back on Saturday and turned the score around 17 1/2 to 14 1/2. On Sunday we had eleven matches. they won 6 and we won 5 to end up 22 1/2 to 20 1/2."

"The beauty of golf is the handicap system," said US Captain Adair Ibarra, "So someone with a 9.5 handicap shouldn't be afraid to play a 10.3 player for example."

The US captain thinks that if he had not agreed to change the format for Saturday from 2-man alternate shot to a two-man scramble, the USA would have had a better chance to win, "I accept full responsibility for this loss," he added.

48 players started the tournament on Friday and only 22 players played on Sunday.

"The biggest winners were Candles For Life and the cancer group from Mexico, GAC who both benefitted thanks to IBC," concluded the US Captain.

"We were very happy with IBC, Mr. Cerna and Claire Treviño for all they help," stated Hernandez, "We hope to dispute the cup next year and we'll be ready."
