The CC Winn Mavericks traveled to the Alamo City to complete another home-home setup with the Central Catholic Buttons on Friday night where the Mavericks struck first behind the running of Ethan Johnston, coupled with a 50+ yard strike to senior Wide Receiver Luis Olvera to put the Mavericks in business deep in Central Catholic territory.

Johnston took the ball into the end zone late in the first quarter from seven yards out to put the Mavs up 6-0 after the extra point failed.

The Buttons got on the board with a 29 yard field field goal by Franco Querido which made the halftime score 6-3 at the break.

The Maverick defense anchored by Mikey De Los Santos and Ernesto Villaseñor at the backer position, and JJ Garcia, Xavier Cerezo and Brandon Wheeler in the defensive backfield kept the home team's offense at bay for most of the second half. Then at the three minute mark, the Buttons outscored Winn 17-0 with a two touchdown passes, one of which's extra point was blocked by Wheeler. A fumble recovery for a touchdown late in the game gave the Buttons a 22-6 victory.

"We had a good first half," said Coach Eric Villaseñor. "The kids played well, we just have to put a complete game together, and we're looking to do so against McCollum next week."

The Eagles and Mavericks will be off this week on their open dates, and they're both hoping to take care of business from here on out.

     "It's a new season," said Villaseñor. "Everyone's 0-0 and we're looking to go 1-0 in District 29-AAAAA."
