"Richie [Luna] had a minor tweak on one of his legs and we decided to let him rest up and DeeAndre came in and played really well," stated Offensive Coordinator Javier Cardenas. "We came out slow in the first half, but luckily we picked it up."
Picked it up is right. News Gram Player of the Week Jose Riojas opened up the scoring with a 5 yard run from the running back position with 4:09 remaining in the first half.
Then it was Torres on a 37 yard keeper in the third at the 10:34 mark followed by another successful read on a 10 yard run with 6:19 remaining in the third.
Torres didn't only run the ball well, he threw for almost 200 yards in the air, connecting with Norby Zavala five times for 75 yards, and Albert Guevara six times for fifty; but it was with 8:52 remaining in the game that he hooked up with Rey Rey Mendoza on a 30 yard pitch and catch for a touchdown, followed by another 37 yard strike to Mendoza with 6:49 left in the game.
But Torres wasn't done yet, he hooked up with sophomore Wide Receiver Alan Rodriguez on a killer inside zone read which Rodriguez managed to take to the house 38 yards for the final Eagle score.
The Eagles and Mavericks are both off this coming week, but Coach Tom Gonzalez and his charges are 2 to 0 and ready to host South San Friday, October 13 at Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
