The Eagle Pass News Gram caught up with legendary Laredo Alexander Head Football Coach Joel Lopez on Monday, who expressed a little disdain and concern in his charges as they continue preparations to face-off with the Eagle Pass Eagles here on Friday.

The Bulldogs dropped their first three games against Alice 13 to 27, Laredo Nixon 14 to 19, and big against a very strong SA Clemens squad 0 to 52 last week in the Alamo City.

"We've started out bad," said Coach Lopez who is used to putting up 40+ points on any given Friday night behind offensive arsenals that have played deep into the state playoffs, including the years his son Joel racked up over 10,00 yards passing over the course of his 12 year career. "We expect to execute better on offense, I'd like to see us score a little more, I'd like to see our defense continue to play better, continue to play hard, keep the score low and continue to execute."

His defense is led by junior DT Christian Karodi, senior DE Jacob Torres, senior CB's Carlos Huerta and Peter Brewster, as well as  5' 10", 250 Lb. Junior MLB Santino Palizo.

"Santino is rock solid like a block of granite,” said Lopez.”He's been out and hopefully he'll be back by Friday.”

On offense, Alvy Laurel, a junior WR, leads the team in several passing categories.

"He's a great route runner," added Lopez. "He catches good balls."

Lopez also mentioned his other WR Neal Garza.

Overall he commented that all of his offensive line does a good job up front protecting returning QB Matthew Conner. The O-line includes 6' 4" 290 Lb. RG Juan Montoya, senior RT Rey Perez, a three-year varsity veteran.

"This is a big, big game for us," said Lopez. "We've been struggling, so we hope to turn this season around for us."
