Wheeler shot in, blocked the kick, scooped up the failed attempt, and ran it back for a touchdown to give Eric Villaseñor's CC Winn Mavericks their first victory of the season.
Wheeler blocked a last ditch effort by the Wolves to come away with a win on their home turf by kicking a field goal with less than a minute left on the game clock, and ran it back about sixty yards for the winning score.
"The kids played hard and they finished. Our entire defensive unit played well," said Maverick Head Coach Eric Villaseñor. "Mikey De Los Santos, Wheeler and Xavier Cerezo had good games."
Ethan Johnston scored from two yards out on a QB keeper in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was scooped up by LBJ's Ricardo Musquiz, and returned 80 yards for two points making the score 6 to 5.
Johnston later connected with tight end Isaac Villarreal on an impressive 24 yard pitch and catch in the third quarter to put the Mavericks up 13 to 5.
It was after a short run by Wolf running back Manuel Rodriguez that LBJ came close to overtaking the visiting Silver & Black, making it 13 to 11 in the fourth quarter. The extra point was no good.
The Wolf 'D' put a halt to the final Maverick drive, giving them the ball and a chance to win the game with a field goal attempt after Wolf QB Albert Garcia made two key completions on a 3rd and 24 for 12 and 13 yards to Jonathan Ornelas to keep the drive alive, but Wheeler came through and made the game winning play just in time to give the CC Winn Mavericks some momentum with the big game against the Eagles coming up this week.
"It's a non-district game with a lot of hype around it," closed Villaseñor, "We're going to prepare and give it our best shot on Friday."
