With the season opener out of the way, attention turns to the week 2 opponent. For the Eagle Pass Eagles, looking ahead to its match-up against a very familiar foe in Laredo Cigarroa Toros. Last year the Eagles went into Shirley Field and dominated the game from start to finish 49-0.
Laredo Cigarroa's 2016 campaign was one they would like to forget going 1-9 overall with a 0-8 district 31-5A record finishing last in district.
The Toros lost leadership as they graduated 24 seniors but have players coming back that will make their fans cheer on Friday nights. Cigarroa's lone win in 2016 as they opened the season was against Zapata 20-16.
Cigarroa has quarterback Alfredo Sepulveda, who had a modest game throwing 13 for 19 with 113 yards in the air. Player to watch will be senior running back #23 Isaac Solis, who ran the ball hard and racked up 7 carries for 105 yards rushing. Solis is also a threat catching the ball out of the backfield.
Sepulveda's favorite targets will be wide receiver Mario Perez and A. Lucio. Cigarroa's Lucio had 3 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Cigarroa is coming into friday night not wanting to repeat what happen in Laredo a year ago. They are also coming off a loss last week with a score of 28-17 to Zapata.
On the defensive side of the ball Junior DE #4 Danny Diaz will be a force to be reckon with as he got into the backfield and had 15 tackles.
Playing in district 31-5A with Laredo Nixon, Pioneer, Sharyland,Veterans Memorial, Rio Grande City, Roma, Laredo Martin, and Valley View.
Eagle Pass prepared this week as they also had a season opening defeat to Medina Valley 28-27. "We changed things up for the week from our normal routine, "said Coach Tom Gonzalez.
Offensively, the Eagles looked good putting up 27 points getting a balance attack both on the ground and in the air. Junior Quarterback #10 Richard Luna had himself a coming out game rushing for a game-high 14 carries for 142 yards and tacked on 143 yards completing 14 of his 21 pass attempts with 3 TD's (stats provided by Conrado Perez).
Defensively, the Eagles' will have to contend with an air attack this week as Cigarroa likes to throw the ball little more. Junior Linebacker David Kypuros will have to rally his troops in order to give their defense off the field on third downs.
Kickoff will be Friday September 8 at 7:30 pm from the Eagle Pass SAC. Get to the game early as the Mighty Eagles are having Parent's Night. Catch all the live play by play action on www.mixlr.com/stxsportstalk
