The CC Winn Mavericks continue notching victories across South Texas as they most recently traveled to Poteet to participate in the Poteet Invitational, albeit two key players short, nevertheless they were able to muster up three big wins to come away with the tournament championship.

In the first game of the tourney, the Mavericks squared off with a very competitive Nixon Mustang squad who jumped out to a first quarter lead and led 25-22 at halftime.

The Mavs came back in the third quarter to outscore the 'Stangs 21-16 and then secured the lead in the fourth behind some quality scores and some stingy defense to take a close 55-52 victory in their opening game on Friday despite being outshot by Nixon 49% to 38%.

Rogelio Roque and Adrian Jimenez led all scorers with 19 and 18 points respectively.

In Game 2, the host Poteet Aggies came out a little flat as the Mavs jumped out to a 14-8 lead at the end of one.  Maverick Head Coach George Ruiz' former stomping grounds in Poteet came alive as the Ags made a significant push in the second quarter matching the Mavs point for point 14-14 to made it interesting as the two squads went into the locker rooms with Winn up 31-22.

Poteet came out firing in the second half outscoring the Mavericks 21-18 and 14-9 in the third and fourth quarters but Roque and sophomore sensation Albert Nandin were too much for the maroon and white from the Strawberry Capital of the World and the Mavs were in the championship with a razor-sharp 58-57 victory.

Roque dropped another 21 points, Nandin had 13, and Jimenez scored nine.  The key to the win had to be the Mavericks 60% shooting from the free-throw line to Poteet's 43% as the Mavs were 6 for 10 from the stripe and the Aggies went a dismal 9 for 21.

Then on Saturday night, it was the Gold and Black Attack of the Lytle Pirates who came into the Poteet Gymnasium for all the marbles against The Silver & Black Attack of the CC Winn Mavericks in the championship game and something had to give.

Both teams felt each other out in the first quarter with neither gaining the upper hand as they ended up 14-13 ater one with CC Winn on top.  The both teams exchanged baskets in the second quarter with Winn outscoring the Bucs 16-13 to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room at the half.  Winn pulled away at the end and the Mavs came away with a 60-46 victory and the Championship Trophy for JT Sanchez' squad.

Rogelio Roque had another big night with a 28 point performance in the championship with seven rebounds and was 6 for 9 from the free-throw line.  Adrian "Adge" Jimenez also contributed an outstanding 20 points and was 3 for 8 from three point range with six rebounds.  Albert Nandin and big Chris Cantú also contributed six points each in the win.

The Mavs are finally in town tomorrow night against the Cigarroa Toros at 7:30 P.M. in the CC Winn Gymnasium.
