Tres Barrera, son of Sylvia and Felipe Barrera of Eagle Pass, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Texas at Austin.
Barrera, a standout at Mission Sharyland High School who is presently quarterbacking the rattler football team deep into the Texas State High School Playoffs as we speak, is a highly recruited catcher/third baseman who has excelled at the state and national levels while playing Area Code select baseball all across the United States.
Present at the signing were his parents, his brother Tana, Sharyland Head baseball Coach Bruce Bickerton and Rattler Head Football Coach, Ron Adame.
Tres is the grandson of the late Felipe Barrera and his wife Lesvia, and the nephew of Eagle Passans Julie and David Lopez, Rita and Norman Carreon and Juanita and Epy Perez.
Barrera has excelled at very high levels in both baseball and football as the Rattlers have advanced deep into the State Playoffs behind his accurate passing and leadership. His accolades and achievements include 2009 District 30 AAAAA All-Valley Newcomer of the Year, 1st Team All-District and All-Valley Shortstop (2010), 1st Team All-District Pitcher and Shortstop, 1st Team All-Valley Shortstop and 1st Team All-State Shortstop (2011) in baseball and Sharyland Football Offensive MVP Award as well as the District 30 AAAAA MVP Award in 2011 on the gridiron. The Rattlers battled it out with the Madison Mavericks on Friday in the third round of the Division I 5A Playoffs.
The Eagle Pass News Gram salutes Tres and his family on this fabulous accomplishment as he will have the opportunity to further his academic and athletic career as a Texas Longhorn under the tutelage of Augie Garrido
