CC Winn High School Golf Team ready to compete in 2016-2017 season

The CC Winn High School golf teams, under the direction of Head Coach Pat Hernandez and Assistant Coaches Jaime Flores and Juan Antonio Tovar are ready for the 2016- 2017 season. With 10 girls and 9 boys making up the team, the Mavericks and Lady Mavericks golf teams are making quite an impression and are eager and ready to make this a memorable year.

The girls made their first appearance at the Welaco ISD Varsity girls golf tournament at Tierra Santa Golf Club on October 28 and 29 with 13 teams from the valley participating. They were paired up Edinburgh High, Economedes, Donna North in the first day of competition.

Captain Julianna Vasquez shot an 83, Victoria Santana-Carrazco shot a 100, Jessica Valdez came in with a 105, new girls Mayra Garza and Kaylee Sepulveda both shot a 136, and Miriam Perez and Lorena Aldape 147.

Saturday morning the team was in fourth place and Julianna was paired up with Weslaco High and Los Fresnos who both shot a 74. Mission High shot a 76 and CC Winn an 83. Julianna struggled that second day and came in with a 106, Mayra 150, Lorena 150, Kaylee 139, Mayte 121, while Mission shot a 145, putting the team in fifth place behind Economedes by one stroke.

The boys made their first appearance at the PSJA Invitational in Pharr, TX at the Tierra del Sol golf course on November 4 and 5. With 10 teams participating in the tournament, the CC Winn boys were paired up against Mission High, Economedes and Laredo Cigarroa.  Diego Ibarra shot a 75 along with Matthew Rodriguez a 75, Alex Rios shot a 103, Joe Ojeda a 106, Juan Mata a 138, Jesse Gaytan a 111, and Berni Baltazar a 139. The team was in 12th place on day one.

Coming into Saturday, the course was playing quite different with the heavy rains that had fallen on Friday. The team was paired up with the top teams of Harlingen, PSJA North, Edinburgh Vela, Sharyland, as well as McAllen High, and PSJA Memorial. Diego Ibarra shot  a 78 that tied him for 8th place, Matthew Rodriguez an 85 which tied him for 16th place, Alex Rios shot a 107, Jose Ojeda a 119, Juan Mata a 121, and new comers Jesse Gaytan a 128, and Berni Balazar 147. The team finished in 16th place.

The boys team is hoping to travel to San Antonio in December. The girls will be competing at the Sharyland Pioneers Varsity Golf Tournament on November 11 and 12 in Mission, Tx.
