The C.C. Winn Mavericks are set to match-up against the Uvalde Coyotes Thursday night in a critical game for the Mavs, after falling short this past Friday in Floresville against the Tigers losing a tough contest 20 to 16.

This was a tough loss for the Mavericks who were coming into the game with an unbeaten district record. The loss puts the Mavs at 3-1 against district opponents and 7-2 overall.

The Homecoming game promises to be a memorable match-up as the Coyotes currently have a matching over all record of 7-2 and are coming off of a big win against McCollum 42-14.

“We’re just looking forward to the next challenge. Our kids have prepared well this week, looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd tomorrow night,” said Head Coach Eric Villaseñor. “We’re in the position for the district championship and this is where you want to be in the last week of the regular season, gaining some momentum heading into the playoffs.”

Although athletes are dealing with bumps and bruises, which is normal this time of year, Villaseñor said they’re excited.

“They’re going to battle through injuries and it’s going to boil down to execution tomorrow night,” said Villaseñor.

The excitement isn’t exclusive to the athletes.

“It’s electric on campus to say the least. Everybody’s on board, student body, teachers, support staff, administrators, everybody’s looking to buy the Maverick t-shirts, Maverick football tickets,” said Villaseñor. “It’s an exciting time to be a Maverick right now.”

Uvalde will be a difficult opponent for the Mavericks to face.

“They’ve sort of become our district rivals, since we moved to the 5A rank,” said Villaseñor. “It’s always intense, it’s always a challenge, but it’s going to come down to execution, and I think the team that executes better will win the football game.”

With a guaranteed District 29-5A playoff spot the Mavericks are now waiting for round one of playoffs, scheduled for Friday, November 11 at Rutledge Stadium in San Antonio at 7:30 p.m.

“We will be the visiting team. We won’t know the opponent until Friday night because it’s a little bit muddy over there as far as the standings go, but our potential opponents are Corpus Christi King, Corpus Christi Ray, and Corpus Christi Carroll,” said Villaseñor.

The Mavericks will face the Uvalde Coyotes tonight, Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in C.C. Winn’s Homecoming game.
