When one thinks of the Olympics, which bring out the best in athletes from all over the world who come out on one glorious day to see who the best is in their particular sport, there are always the Special Olympics which were organized for those who have the same spirit of competition in them, but for whatever their level of specialness, they were not able to compete on the same level as a let's say a Usain Bolt.

Well all of our most special came out en masse from not only our EPISD schools, but from across South Texas to have their chance to represent their nation in these games as the 2016 Special Olympics were held here on Tuesday.

Francisco Borrego from Eagle Pass High School recited the pledge of Allegiance. Amanda Lee Martin had a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.  CC Winn's Alejandra Cervantes recited the Athlete's Oath.   Then our district's instructional leader, EPISD Superintendent took the podium.

"I want to thank our board members for taking time out of their busy schedules to recognize the efforts of our student athletes," said Gonzalez, "These people continue to serve our school district and students in many ways."

Board Members Lupita Fuentes, Hilda Martinez, Glenna Purcell, Rudy Bowles were present.

"The Special Olympics is an event that allows the community to come together in celebration of competition and goodwill.  It gives us an opportunity to share a moment in the lives of these children and recognize that when you are given the chance you can do extraordinary things.  The Special Olympics unite a number of people from the athletes to the people next to them who take pride in helping our athletes live a full life not just today, but every day."

Sgt. Timothy Leath of the Texas 92nd Jr. ROTC handled the duties of organizing some of our EPHS Special Ed. students to serve as the color guard for the event.

It was then that the traditional passing of the Special Olympics torch with the assistance of the contingent from the US Border Patrol and Homeland Security bringing it into the stadium after their 5K run from International Bridge I to Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium to add the final touches to the opening ceremonies.
