Eagle Pass Golf Course

For the fifth year, a tradition which celebrates the camaraderie and competitive nature of athletes who have so much in common, that only a winding river separates them from each other and every year, just after the Ryder Cup is played between the best professional golfers from the United States versus the best golfers the continent of Europe has to offer, the River Cup is played at the Eagle Pass Golf Course between 30-35 golfers from Eagle Pass against their similar from our neighboring country of Mexico.  A total of 72 matches were held over three days with the Cup decided on the last couple of matches. Team Captains Beto Ochoa of Mexico led his charges against Captain Dr. Ruben Barron's USA Squad from October 6th thru the 8th in a variety of match-play formats. On Friday, the US jumped out to a 10-7 lead in a four-man scramble format which allows all four teammates to play the best ball hit around the course.

Despite being down after the first day of competition, the rarest occurrence in golf was witnessed on this inaugural day.  It was on the Par 3 8th hole where Huicho Villarreal pulled a seven iron from his bag and proceeded to hole his tee shot in one magnificent shot as his ball faded into the hot Eagle Pass air and onto the green where it ended up in the hole for an Eagle, hole-in-one.  An incredible shot! On day 2, one of Team Mexico's best, Ricardo "Neo" De La Cabada, aptly nicknamed Spider-Man by his teammates had an unfortunate mishap in celebration walking the wall after winning his match on Saturday where he broke an ankle and was unable to continue in the competition. In the Day 2 Low Ball formatted Match Play in teams, Team Mexico ended The day up by one point after a fantastic 12-8 performance against Eagle Pass' best players. Then on Day 3 and only up by one point, it was time for the head-to-head match ups where Captain Ochoa pitted Raul Figuero a against arguably Eagle Pass' best player, Jesus "Chamo" Diaz a player recognized in North Texas and a participant in past Texas Opens. Diaz also known as "Whopper" hit one of the most magnificent shots of the competition on his third shot on the Par 4 6th, Diaz put it within one foot of the hole to tap in for par to end the match All Square after 18 holes of play. another big time win for Team Mexico was Jorge De La Cabada 3 and 2 against Toby "The Lizard" Jacinto, another scratch golfer on a strong USA Squad. Some other interesting matches included Hugo Cantú vs Che Rodriguez who have squared off for four years in a row with Cantú winning 1 Up. Another was Luis Rodriguez of the US vs Toto Gonzalez of Mexico, one of the hardest played matches of The Cup which after three consecutive years of playing ended up All Square "¡Nada para nadie!"  In a re-match of last year, the US' Jesus Diaz-Wever and Jose Luis "La Banana" Hernandez ended up with Hernandez winning 2 and 1 after eighteen holes. It was a threesome which provided the biggest fireworks of Sunday's play as in order to speed up play, German Zavala, Anselmo Elizondo and Javier Alejo of Team Mexico faced Rudy Muñoz, Tony Maldonado and Eliaz Maldonado of Team USA.  All three Mexican players came out victorious and on the 18th hole, all three players put their approach shots within 10 feet from the pin, an amazing feat as they all holed their putts and scored three more points for Mexico's cause. But even with all this success, the Fifth Annual River Cup came down to the final two players on the final hole and the final shot as a big time putt by Chalo Frausto, a 25 foot bomb from right to left and downhill no less for birdie decided the Cup as he defeated Willie De La Garza one of the US' best players with 45 years of playing experience, for Team Mexico to win the match and their third River Cup in a row. Captain Beto Ochoa closed by informing The News Gram that they are expecting reinforcements next year and look forward to the 6th Cup next year.
