The CC Winn Mavericks knocked off the Laredo Martin Tigers on Thursday, a Tiger football team coached by former Maverick Head Coach David Charles, and a squad sitting alone in third place of District 29-AAAAA.
Maverick Head Coach Eric Villaseñor informed The News Gram that his defense played well behind the play of Alberto Duran, Ramiro Valdez, Eddie Aranda and Alonso Vallejo who had a touchdown-saving tackle in the 4th quarter.
The offense led by senior quarterback Reyes Lopez answered Martin's two scores with touchdowns by Lalo Martinez on a five yard TD run in the 2nd quarter and Reyes Lopez with a three yard run to win the game after Raudel Gomez' second PAT of the game. Lopez had 103 yards rushing in this game and Martinez broke the 100 yard mark yet once again with 130 yards.
"We're one step closer to the playoffs," said Coach Villaseñor who is looking to get the Mavs over that hump by continuing to play team football behind the mantra 'Trust The Process.'
The Mavericks, 3-2 in district play, take on the Laredo Nixon Mustangs in what they hope to be a repeat performance next week at Shirley Field.
