A.D. Ibarra -Eagle Pass
In the fourth installment of our weekly feature, The Eagle Pass News Gram highlights two players from each of our Fightin' High School Football Squads, the New-look Eagle Pass Eagles who take the United Longhorns next week and The Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks who will tangle with the Laredo Martin Tigers on Thursday. First up for the Mavericks is starting Running Back Lalo Martinez.
First of all Lalo, congratulations on your amazing performance against Uvalde. I also enjoyed watching you come into your own against Southside. I've got a battery of questions for you, are you ready? Yes, Sir.
I'll begin by asking who your influences are?
My brother takes the spot of being my biggest influence. Because of him I do what I do. He's always there for me and I know he always will be.
What are your goals this season?
My goals for this season is to finish the regular season with a winning record and to take my team to the playoffs.
Who's your favorite NFL team?
The New England Patriots. College team? Alabama.
What's your favorite play?
25 GY. I just love watching my O-line blow out the defenders, giving me space to gain extra yards. Give me your career highlight. My career highlight is not a running play or a passing play, it was the time I predicted a fumble and ended up being a scoop and score.
What are your plans after Graduation?
To attend technical school.
Major?
Engineering. Give me some advice to give to a seventh grader starting football. Trust your coaches, go 100% every day, every game. Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel. Coming out of the tunnel is like no other feeling. Just listening to our fight song and hearing the crowd. You know it's game time!
Next up is Eagle Outside Linebacker David Ramos. Congratulations on that scoop and score against the Southwest Dragons the night of the lightning storm! Proud of you. I've got some questions for you are you ready? Yes, Sir.
Who are your influences?
My parents. They support me in everything I do. They give me the reason to keep going, In the pros it would have to be Dez Bryant. I like how he's explosive whenever he gets the ball and tries to get extra yards.
What are your goals this season?
Hopefully clinch a playoff spot in the State Playoffs.
Who's your favorite NFL team?
The Dallas Cowboys. College? Texas.
What's your favorite play and why?
Bama Wide Stab because it's a blitz for me on the outside and I like rushing the quarterback.
What is your career highlight?
Against Southwest we were down 21-14 in the 4th quarter with two minutes to go. I picked up a loose ball and took it into the endzone. What are your plans after graduation? Going to college.
Major?
Criminal Justice.
What advice would you give a seventh grader playing football for the first time?
Always keep working. One day you'll be able to get a chance at the varsity level the way I did and eventually it'll payoff. Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel. It's an awesome feeling coming out and looking to the right and seeing everybody dressed in orange jumping up and down screaming. The Eagle War Cry is one of the most motivational songs I have ever heard!
