When playing the vital position of safety on defense, I, as a coach and fan have always told my defensive backs to promise me one thing, and many if not all of them can tell you, "Whatever you do, promise me that the first play coming your way will not be an interception. I want you to let them know how it's gonna be... all night long." What I'm referring to is if the defensive back so chooses, he will not go after the ball, but to wait until the receiver touches the ball and inflict as much punishment as they can, trying to keep him from holding on to the ball. When I asked Coach Tom Gonzalez about his safeties this year, he mentioned that if this is the case in either of their areas, they will light you up. Especially in Kevin Chisum's case as he feels that his one year of experience at the position can be seen this season as the 6'1", 175 Lb. Junior enters his second season as the starting strong safety for the Eagles. We recall that his grandfather, Frank Chisum was also a highly recruited safety in his days in Cozell Foster's Eagle "D" as well as in Texas A&I's National Championship run in the early 60's alongside All-State Eagle Tackle Enrique "La Gorila" Ibarra.

"Last year you could see it in his eyes that it was his first season at the position, this year he's much more comfortable back there," said Gonzalez who is preparing for Alexander who will visit this week during EPHS Homecoming festivities where both Ruiz and Chisum will be tested mach in the balanced Bulldog attack. On the other hand, RJ Ruiz, 5'10", 165 Lbs., is a smart player according to Gonzalez, "He's like a QB on the field, he directs traffic, he's fast and he knows the game." Ruiz has made a few big plays this young season, has a couple of picks and has made many tackles. Gonzalez says that both Ruiz and Chisum are good tacklers and are good hitters. "They're both good leaders, the type you love having on your team." In the Land of the Silver & Black Attack, there lurks another animal of the Free Safety persuasion who goes by the name of Kevin De Luna, 5'10", 170 Lbs., who according to Coach George Ruiz, sports an exceptional GPA, is at the top of his class and is a leader who works hard. "He shows up everyday to practice and is a true leader and an example for my squad," says Ruiz of De Luna who has also stepped in at Outside Line Backer and has done well. "He's also come in at running back and is averaging six yards a carry, has scored once and has been stopped at the half yard line three separate times. At safety he has had three pass breakups for long yards, is steady on run support and is our last line of defense," states Ruiz, "He's made some critical open field tackles for us." "With all his athletic ability, the thing that stands out is his positive outlook and work ethic everyday at practice." De Luna is an example for all future Maverick players to follow as football slowly steps to the forefront of South Side athletics as the baseball program has done in the past two years. If the talent at the elementary and junior high levels is any indication, Winn is in for some very productive years. The Mavs travel to Del Rio tomorrow to face the Rams.
