-Eagle Pass

In the fifth installment of our weekly feature, The Eagle Pass News Gram highlights two players from each of our Fightin' High School Football Squads, the New-look Eagle Pass Eagles who take on United South in their first district ball game this week and The Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks who are preparing to play their third district game in Uvalde this Friday.

First up for the Eagles is starting Tackle Jovan Garza.

First of all Jovan, I know you all have been working hard for the past two weeks to get ready for South.  I'm sure you and your coaching staff have been working hard to kickoff district competition.  I've got a battery of questions for you, are you ready?

Yes, Sir.

I'll begin by asking who your influences are?

My biggest influences are my family, my parents Juan and Marina Jo, my brother Johnny and my grandparents Sonny and Marina... They have always been there for me since I can remember... From early soccer and tee-ball games when I was four to my current Friday Night football games.  Also all of my coaches that have coached me throughout the years, from my early years to junior high and now high school and that includes you too Coach Ibarra!  Cardinal Connection!

What are your goals this season?

My goals this season are to become the best right tackle that I can be so that I can do my part to help my team succeed and go to each game with the mindset to dominate and win!  Also to go deep in the playoffs.

Who's your favorite NFL team?

My favorite football team are the Dallas Cowboys.  My favorite Cowboy player at my position was Larry Allen.  I recently saw a YouTube video where he bench pressed 700 pounds and a prevent six play where he ran down a Saints linebacker after an interception.  Amazing!

College team?

My favorite college team are the Texas Longhorns.  Go Tres!

What's your favorite play?

All plays are crucial and can be the difference between winning or losing... I am ready for whatever play Coach Cardenas calls, but I must admit that 25 GT has been a favorite play of mine because I get to use my quick feet and power to get my 1st level and 2nd level blocks to open up holes for Alan and Marky!

Give me your career highlight.

I had really good games against Del Rio and John Jay.  We scored 48 points against Jay last year and as a Sophomore, I began to gain confidence.  This year I find I'm dominating my opponents more and it feels good.  I feel I'm opening up a lot of big holes.

What are your plans after Graduation?

My plan after graduation is to attend a university and get a college degree in the science field.  I am still undecided of where to go.  If an opportunity for a football scholarship is offered to play at the next level, it would be a dream come true for me and my family.

Major?

Something in the science field.

Give me some advice to give to a seventh grader starting football.

Remember that you are representing your family, your school and your community.  Enjoy it because before you know it it's all over.  Give 110% on every down, especially in practice.

Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel.

Coming out of the tunnel is a great opportunity to see those of our loved ones and our fans we play for every night.  I love hearing the Eagle War Cry and hitting the field.  It still gives me goose bumps.  We truly have a lot of fans that come to every game and we really appreciate them.

Next up is Maverick Defensive Back Alex De Jesus.

I know you guys had a tough game against Medina Valley, but I'm sure you'll bounce right back when you play the Coyotes this Friday. Proud of you. I've got some questions for you are you ready?

Yes, Sir.

Who are your influences?

The biggest influences in my life are my mom and dad because they show me that I should never give up on myself in sports or life.

What are your goals this season?

To take the CC Winn football team to our first ever playoffs!

Who's your favorite NFL team?

The Dallas Cowboys.

College?

UTSA.

What's your favorite play and why?

My favorite play is any play the opposing offense tries to test me on covering the deep ball.  When they do, I take it personally and I will jump to block it, do anything I can to make sure they don't catch it or even pick it off.

What is your career highlight?

My career highlights have been all my open field tackles and having never given up a deep ball in my career.

What are your plans after graduation?

To attend the US Border Patrol training camp in New Mexico.

Major?

Criminal Justice.

What advice would you give a seventh grader playing football for the first time?

Never give up on your goals.  Always give an 100% effort in practice and on game days.

Finally, tell our readers what it feels like to come out of the tunnel.

Truly blessed and excited because it's game time!!!
