The CC Winn Mavericks, who last week convincingly defeated a Southside Cardinal team that had defeated them by double digits last season, were brought back down to earth by a potent offensive attack from Medina Valley 28-7 before a packed Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday.
Time of possession was heavy in favor of the visiting Panthers as they unveiled a passing attack that was not there last season where they escaped with a 14-7 victory that after it was all said and done, kept the Mavericks from their first post-season berth in school history.
The Mavericks looked lethargic at best in the first half as the Panthers outwitted the Winn defense three times with long scoring strikes from Panther quarterback Walker Petty who riddled the Maverick secondary from forty, thirty and from the red zone before going into the locker room with a 21-0 lead at the half hitting mostly Justan and Zach Griggs for significant gains.
Reyes Lopez, Mariano Hernandez, Lalo Martinez and the Mav offense showed signs of brilliance and determination in the second half with Martinez scoring the lone tally in the fourth quarter, but it was little too little, a little too late for the Mavericks who travel to Uvalde this Friday to tangle with the Coyotes.
