In an incredible turn of events, both starting quarterbacks for the

Eagle Pass Eagles and the CC Winn Mavericks, Aaron Morales and Jaime

Vargas, after leading their respective teams to victories this past

week, Morales with a two-touchdown performance in the Eagles' 14-6 win

over Laredo Nixon and Vargas having led the Mavs to a 23-16 win over

the Laredo Martin Tigers, scoring once himself, have fallen to

injuries which may put them at risk of not participating in District

29-AAAAA play this season.

Morales had been highly regarded as the heir apparent to Jose

Rodriguez who led the Eagles to the playoffs last season and had

coaches across the district beginning to worry about how to defend him

this year having scored twice in the Eagles' last outing in Laredo.

Vargas had been the Mavericks signal caller since his sophomore year

showing a gritty toughness and determination which is needed to endure

the heat of defensive stunts and the punishment a signal caller must

take on open field hits or when even having to throw a block down

field.

Whatever the case may be as far as the extent of their injuries, Ty

Chisum and Ricky Flores must now step in for our local squads and

begin to perform at high levels now as district play is less than two

weeks away.

Chisum comes from a proven pedigree of a tradition of quarterbacks in

the Chisum Family dating back to the late 1950's when then Eagle

Captain Frank Chisum led Cozell Foster's Eagle squads to Friday Night

glory and even going on to play for a National Championship at Texas

A&I.

Ricky Chisum also led the Eagles to a District Co-Championship in 1980

and was an effective signal caller and an accurate passer for EP High

in the early 80's.

Chisum's father David was also thrust into the

limelight as Eagle QB in 1988 where his teammates competed against

highly touted squads such as John Jay, Clark, Marshall and the Holmes

Huskies with the Cash Brothers, Johnny Walker and Wilbur Odom three of

which went on to star at UT and the Cash Brothers going on to the NFL

with Odom choosing to go to Michigan.

Now Ty will be called upon by Tom Gonzalez' Eagle Coaching Staff to

take the offense under his wing as he had taken a few snaps at the QB

position last year.

Flores on the other hand has come in at times to run a pass-oriented

style offense sparingly for The Silver & Black Attack last season,

most notably in last season's finale versus those very same Eagles

however in certain situations.

Flores possesses an above average arm and has shown in the past that

he can definitely light it up in terms of spreading the rock around

the yard.  The pressure will definitely be less, seeing that Winn's

traditional run oriented offense clicking on all cylinders this season

behind an equally effective line which has produced two fabulous games

for first year varsity scat-back Deion Alonso who has rushed for close

to 400 yards in his first two games.

The Eagles were up for a mighty challenge as they hosted the Alamo

Heights Mules on Friday Night with running back Byron Proctor and QB

Kalen Brockwell coming to town.

The Mavericks also tried to go to an unprecedented 3-0 start as they

hosted Laredo Nixon here on Saturday night.

Results of these two clashes were not available at press time.
