Mario Rendon and Marco Chacon scored for the Mustangs in the first inning to put Nixon up during Spring Break 2-0, but Juanito Garza and Isaac Banda would answer with two hits of their own, scoring on a clutch base hit by Ruben Esqiuivel to knot things up at 2.
Garza would get on again in the bottom of the second after starter Jesus Fraga began to get his bearings getting a 6-4-3 double play to get out of jam in the top of the second. The Mav shortstop would score after Mustang starter Luis Delgado hit Rica Gonzalez to load up the bases. Garza scored on a wild pitch before Delgado got Erick Perez swinging, but not before the Mavs would take the lead 3-2.
Jesus Medellin would get on on a fielder's choice in the fourth and would score on an error by center fielder Aaron Banda and Esquivel would score in the fifth on an error on the Mustang shortstop to pull away.
Arnie Zepeda would score for the 'Stangs in the sixth, but it was a little too little, a little too late for Nixon and the Mavs and Fraga moved to 2-0 on the young season.
Fraga had a complete game three-hitter with 9 K's and 2 bases on balls.
The Mavericks face Southside from San Antonio tomorrow at the EPISD Baseball Complex.
